Need to learn about map api keys

Hi everyone and thanks for letting me join. I need to learn about map API key features. We are 2 sailors sailing around the world doing charity work and good deeds. 

My first question is, do we have to have a google API key to use alternative maps? We are building an App and looking for help. We have got as far as inputing the SDK enable but have got cold feet.
