ArcGIS Pro vs ArcGIS Pro + Utility Network Tool

Question

Hi! I am just getting started with trying to understand ArcGIS Pro and the best ways to map out our Electric Distribution System to make it easy as possible to maintain while displaying useful clean data / info.

As it stands we are currently hosted off the Town's platform but was wondering if other Electric Utilities have their own GIS Portals / licensing? I currently have a Creator license without the Utility Network Tool. Is it worth getting this tool or will I be able to create the same structure with just ArcGIS Pro?

There is not a one size fits all setup for the ArcGIS platform and licensing. We have seen situations like yours where your portal is utilized by many different departments. A singular ArcGIS Portal is beneficial for easy collaboration and ease of use for users as all the data is stored and accessed from one location. The only concern you might want to research is whether the current portal configuration can perform well with your electric network and that the workers that need to access the electric network data can indeed access it. Creating a separate portal does require some extra work for managing multiple platforms, obtaining additional licensing, and allocating infrastructure for the platform to run on but if you want data separation this is an option.

The main differences between the utility network and geometric networks is the advanced network connectivity rules and the ability to trace the utility network. The utility network has more advanced rule to configure regarding which types of features can connect to each other and how they can be connected. This leads to the ability to trace the network to check for connectivity and to find the electric features that are along different circuits and feeds.
