I hope this message finds you well. My name is Kavin Phabiani, I am currently a senior studying computer science at UC Riverside. I am currently in the process of applying to graduate programs in Spatial Data Science at universities such as USC and UIUC, as well as a few programs in pure Data Science. I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of geospatial technologies and data-driven insights, and I want to build a career where I can leverage these skills to tackle real-world challenges.
However, as I navigate the various options available, I’m seeking guidance from this community of experienced geospatial professionals. Here are a few questions I’d love your input on:
Is pursuing a specialized Spatial Data Science program the right path?
- Programs like those at USC and UIUC offer a dedicated focus on geospatial analytics, which excites me. At the same time, I wonder if keeping things broader (e.g., through a general Data Science program) might provide more flexibility in the future. What do you think?
How valuable are geospatial tools like ArcGIS in the industry?
- I’ve gained some experience with ArcGIS and Python for spatial analysis, and I’m curious: How central are tools like these in your day-to-day work? Should I focus on developing expertise in specific platforms, or should I prioritize broader technical skills like machine learning, big data, and cloud computing?
What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
- If you were in my shoes, what steps would you take to build a strong foundation in this field? Are there professional organizations, internships, or specific projects you’d recommend pursuing?
