At the beginning of August 2024, the new ArcGIS Maps SDKs for Native Apps Version 200.5 were released for .NET, Qt, Swift, Kotlin, and also Java. This is a good opportunity to remind you that the next version 200.6 announced for November will be the last release of the ArcGIS Maps SDK for Java, after which there will be no further releases.
The background of the announcement is the classic evolution of IT. Nowadays, Java is primarily used for development in the enterprise environment, e.g., for server-side logic. App development itself has also changed; Java has never been a good choice for mobile apps and there are better technologies for desktop apps.
There is no reason to panic. The last release will be supported until November 2028, enough time to migrate to a suitable alternative ArcGIS Maps SDK. New projects should of course no longer be started with the ArcGIS Maps SDK for Java.
