How to Download Tile Layer From ArcGIS Online Using ArcGIS API?

I'm trying to download and archive ArcGIS Online Groups, saving their data and content to a server folder. Feature layers are straightforward, but what's the best way to download tile layers? I'm having trouble using the item.export or export_image approach.
