"An error has occurred" - application error with Esri Maps for Office 2.1

Question

I installed Esri Maps for Office 2.1 and while the install runs fine (the Add-in appears in the ribbon in Excel and Powerpoint), as soon as I try and insert a map into an empty Excel doc or empty Powerpoint doc - I get the message "An error has occurred."

I have the following setup:

EsriMapsForOffice_x86_2.1_en.exe (Install file)
Windows 7 Professional (Version 6.1.7601 SP 1 Build 7601) x64
MS Excel 2013 (15.0.4454.1503) MSO (15.0.4517.1005) 32-Bit
MS PowerPoint 2013 (15.0.4420.1017) MSO (15.0.4517.1005) 32-Bit

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Esri Maps for Office, and repaired MS Office, and completed all Windows Updates (as of 7/29/2013), but still can't get it to run.

As a side note, I installed the 64 bit version of Maps for Office on an entirely 64-bit virtual machine and it installs and runs fine.

Hi,

the error occurs, because PowerPoint tries to load the TopoMap from AGOL and not from your Portal. If you don't have acces to the internet you will get this error after the request times out. I found a defaultconfiguration.xml at \program files\Esri Maps for Office\config there is a link to the TopoMap at AGOL. I tried to change this value but it won't fix the problem.

Can anyone help with this?

Has anyone figured out what is causing this?  I'm having a similar issue where it tries to locate the items in the worksheet, but then
throws the error once it has run for a bit (while flashing "Processing" in the Map Contents).

I'm getting the same error as Kate.  I'm running Office 2013 Professional and uninstalled/reinstalled EM4O 2.1.1.  I always get to the same point of adding excel data to the map and it crashes.  I've attached a screenshot below.

I get to the Location Columns and I get an Error message "An error has occurred."  This error message is really helpful with explaining how to fix the error...

Don't know what to do.  Any ideas?
