Geodatabase add field is greyed out

Question

Hi all,

I'm trying to add a field and do a calculation on the field. I have editing permissions to do edits. However, when I try to add a field, it's greyed out.

Or your FeatureClass is compressed...?

As SteveCole wrote and you may have to unregister as versioned to add a field.

First thing is to make sure you are not in an editing session. You cannot add fields when you are in an edit session. If you go to the menu on the Editor toolbar, make sure it says "Start Editing". This was all assuming that you're trying to add the field from the table window of your feature layer. The other option is to try and use the ArcToolbox tool: Data Management->Fields->Add Field
