How to import geofence to GeoEvent

I want to import a geofence to GeoEvent, in what format should the geometry be so that this is possible? I currently have a published feature layer on my Enterprise Portal that contains a Polygon layer. This cannot be imported as a geofence since I am unable to choose the Polygon layer in the drop down bar for "Layer" in GeoEvent and I receive the error  "Unable to import GeoFences with current query; please check and try again".

I have tried different formats for layers to import but have not been successful with any. Any help with instructions how to import a geofence would be appreciated.
