How to grab data from Feature Layer for Custom Widget

I am looking to create a custom reporting tool that works in the same vein as something like this: Creating a Custom Widget for Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS using the Report Class (esri.com) but instead of a hard coded table, that would be data from the feature layer itself.

Does anyone know how to go about this or where the resources are to learn how to do this?
