Using Python to get distance along a road file

Hello. I am a Supply Chain Management major seeking help with a program to calculate distance. I have enlisted my friend who is studying GIS and he has created a map featuring distribution centers, the delivery points that are delivered to, and road map files. We are trying to find a program that will calculate distance between each distribution center and delivery point along the road map file. Further details are available upon request. Python can access all the tools listed in the network analyst extension.
