Hi Grace,
The below image provides an example of what the map window will look like if the map is paused. You can resume general map functions by clicking the "pause" icon again in the bottom right hand corner of the map window. If the map is not paused, but features are still not being drawn, you can click the refresh button (next to pause).

did you try hitting Esc ? or moving the mouse around the screen when you have the map active?
