Finding the length of a physical segment (pipe) over terrain.

Question

I would like to approximate the physical length of a metal pipe that is extends up a sloped hillside and is laid on the surface. Calculating its length using the tool "calculate geometry attributes" provides two very different options.

* Calculating length (geodesic) which equates to 163 ft
* Calculating length (3D) which equates to 193 ft

What is length 3D? And which option is more accurate to resolve my situation?

I've tried using google earth...regardless, the ruler options they provide are confusing.

Brandon - another measurement (3D) method to consider is in a local scene.  Use the Measure Distance tool in a scene to get the value.  There are several options to consider - 3D distance, map distance, Path Net Distance and so one.
