Advanced print solution

Please find in the codegallery my first version of an advanced print solution:

The backend is developed in Java as a ServerObjectExtension: PChPrintSOE

The communication to the SOE is realized by the REST.
So, any client can be used Flex, Javascript, ...
I just created a simple FlexWidget.

Some features:
- full print over the rest api (usable by any client)
- export to pdf,jpeg,png,emf and mxd!
- view paper layout extent live on map
- make print on a "template" mapservice by keeping the predefined layout
- multi-mapservices/multi-server support
- add graphics on the map view positioned in map units
- add elements on the layout view positioned in paper units like scalebar, scaletext

The code is under full development:
- support for wms layer
- code clean up and reorganization

Any suggestions, remarques or help is welcome.

you don't have to enable the pchPrintSOE capability on your mapservices.

If you have enable the pchPrintSOE capability on a mapservice which has to be printed:
instead of adding the mapservice itself to create the printout, the datasource itself (arcsde layer, fgdb layer, ...) will be added to the printout.
Just check the difference in the generated mxd file in your arcgisoutput directory.

I'm using this functionality to create high-quality large-format printouts.

Good Morning Tom,

I read the above article and I need some extra guidance. I have a template published on my server called: "layout2" It has PCHPrint SOE enabled along with "printMap" under Operations allowed: checked.

In my layout2 map, I have a custom scalebar, legend, north arrow, logo, disclaimer, misc text, etc. that I want printed along with the map extent that I select in your Enhanced print widget.

So, I set the statement below in my PchPrintWidget.xml file:

<toRemoveLayoutElements>
</toRemoveLayoutElements>

Is that a trigger to remove Layout Elements in my "layout2" or in the map template your widget is configuring?

This is a trigger to control the "remote" elements defined on the mxd of your mapservice 'layout2'.

To control the "local" elements you defined in the PChPrintWidget.xml, you have to make a custom development in the PchPrintWidget.mxml.

your command should replace the second ip-address with the machine name:

Just use "localhost" or even better the name of your machine.
Also for the first ip-address, you could use "localhost".

Seems to be related with the JSON support now new in 4.6! I didn't yet installed FlexSDK4.6
To get a quick fix, just install the FlexSDK4.5 and compile with 4.5

I will download the SDK4.6 and will update the code.

I had to use the fully qualified name of the JSON class as the FlexSDK has also a JSON class:

Hi Tom,

Are you saying that the MapServices msd's should not be PrintSOE enabled. I have a blank layout, with no layers, PrintSOE enabled, but also did this for the layers that are being displayed.
Could this be the cause of the 500 error message that I have been getting when I attempt to print?

Could you restart your ArcGIS-Server services (not the mapservices).

Is your "ortho2009" printSOE enabled? You just have to make the "layout" mapservice PrintSOE enabled.
If it's enabled on the "ortho2009" mapservice, disable it.

Could you try to add this lyr file to ArcMAP? Does it work?

Could you try this url?

It should return you the same lyr-file which should also work in ArcMAP.

If you doesn't get the lyr file by url, you have to check the IIS settings.
I think to remember that you have to define a file-mapping for the ".lyr" extensions.

Firstly thanks heaps for sharing your geat widget 🙂

I have got it up and running with my internal Flex application however I am finding an error when I click on the Print button down the bottom - It throws the following error

I have crossdomain.xml file in my root directory. I have tried a few variations inlcuding the below;

When I debug using Fidler I get this really weird error showing that the host is 'localshost' - notice the spelling mistake

I have searched the whole server for the spelling mistake however I can't find it - would you be able to shed anylight as to where that might be coming from? I would really love to get this print function working for my users here - they were very excited when i told them I had found one that would do the job.

I'm trying to install this widget with the new code from http://bitbucket.schuller.lu/pchprintsoe/overview, but I have problems.
All is OK for the installation for PrintSOE (from Java). I have my printmap service url like : http://servercarto/GEONAQWEB/rest/services/layout/MapServer/exts/PCHPrintSOE/
All the setup is OK as in the documentation. But I have an error message and I don't know what can I do with that.
Any ideas, please?

Hey Tom et al,

I'm trying to figure out an issue I just noticed while using your widget. I use Google Chrome for most of my internet activities including my testing of the print widget. Everything is working fine there. However, when I use Internet Explorer, and print a JPG, IE doesn't seem to respect the resolution/scale...if that makes sense. The JPG that is created does not fit on the page that it is supposed to. For example, the print widget is set to JPG, letter size (8.5"x11"), and 200dpi. When trying to print the resulting image (in IE), the image is much larger (roughly 200% but not exactly) more than the paper it's supposed to be on. This does not happen in Chrome, nor is it a problem using PDF instead of JPG. I can not find any settings in IE to adjust. I know it has something to do with the pixels of the image and therefor how they fit on a real-world piece of paper, but I don't know what to do about it.

If I resize the popup window that the print image appears in, in Chrome, then I have the same issue. But apparently something is forcing the pixel ratio to be correct when it pops up...this doesn't seem to happen in IE. The easy way to deal with this is just default to PDF, and that works fine, but if a user wanted to do a JPG I want to be sure that when they print it the scale is not screwed up by this.

Is there a setting that needs to be adjusted in IE, or the widget, so that the JPG image will print correctly in IE?

Hope that makes sense. I found it rather difficult to describe..

Attached is the result when the output is set to JPG, using IE...printed to acrobat to create a pdf to share. This is what comes out on the print.

We had similar problems with jpg printing in toms soe. The workaround we found was to go to ie print options and set a custom size option using the drop down. 46% worked for us, but I suggest you play around with it and see what works for you. Also note that the orientation option you choose in the widget you still need to set in the print options of ie when you use jpg.

could you enable the debugging in the widget and post the messages for each browser:
- InternetExplorer
- Google Chrome
Don't make a zoom or a pan.Just open the viewer and make a print.

The messages should be the same for both browsers.

In the messages, you are getting the resulting image url.
You could try to open the printed image from Chrome in IE and vice versa.

I think, it's a display issue between the browsers.

Graham, Yeah it seemed like a little less than 50% is correct but I don't see how I could expect a public user to do this. Even if I stated it somewhere in the "help", I doubt anyone would even read it.

Tom, It's definitely a difference between the browsers and how they display. The image is the same from each browser but they each handle it differently. IE displays the image at 100% and wants to print as such but it is too big for the paper. Chrome shrinks the image to fit in the browser without having to scroll. For whatever reason, this is the correct size....at least when the browser window is full screen.(at least for me on this machine) However, if I adjust the browser window to not be full screen (in height) then it shrinks the image even further so that it fits in this smaller window....which then causes the print to be a small portion of the paper instead. I'm afraid to even try this on another machine with a smaller monitor or screen resolution.

I realize this is some product of the print resolution vs the screen resolution vs the browsers' handling of it...but how do I make it work? In order to have the scale be correct, the images have to printed exactly as presented. The widget was designed to create these images for print, and to be in scale...how do I ensure that that happens?

I going to force users to print to pdf, and that works perfectly, but for the rare user that doesn't have a pdf viewer, this would be a problem and I'd like to offer jpg as an option.

I just got the newest version of this widget running. had old version running but had some bad areas. What cache or map is this widget using for basemaps?? in the new widget i cannot get the scale bar to show the correct scale. Got the scale text wokring but not the scale bar?? any help is much appreciated.

I'm always generating PDF files to be sure that the printout is correctly with papersize and mapscale.
But you can never be sure if a user is printing a A3-pdf to a A4-paper with "fit-to-scale"

i was able to put all back to the old version i had running and the scalebar and scaletext were good in the old one. but not in the new version. but both have the problem that i emailed you about the gaps in the print that look like maybe cache borders or something??

Hi all,

I am working on getting this widget up and running on my site, and judging from the comments and the live sites, it looks like an awesome widget. Nice work Tom. I am on the .NET platform and had no real trouble installing the soe after figuring out the proper syntax. I created an "empty" map service called Layout and can see that it has the supported PCHPrintSOE extension at the REST endpoint. I configured the PchPrintWidget.xml using the url of the Layout service ("https://servername/ArcGIS/rest/services/Layout/Layout/MapServer/exts/PCHPrintSOE/"), and configured the my app's config.xml to hit the widget. But when I click on the widget in my application nothing happens. I get the spinning clock for a couple of seconds, then nothing. Anyone else ran into this? The widget is exactly what my company is looking for (like so many other people), and any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

could you open the generated mxd file in ArcMAP?
If ArcMAP also contains the display gabs, just try to you clear your ArcMAP display cache?
ArcMAP->Menu->Customize->ArcMapOptions->DisplayCache->ClearCache.

If this helped, just do the same as ArcSOC user.

OK, Got it running properly. had to do as you suggested and delete the cache on server as the arcsoc user and it cleared up the map !! this is a great widget. and i appreciate all your help on getting it running.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for getting back to me. I don't have Flash builder installed on the same box as AGS so I used Fiddler (as suggested by Eric Venden in post #32 on this form). Every time except once I get no traffic reporting back to Fiddler when i call on the Advanced Print Widget. Why would this be? Not installed correctly? I am not sure. The one time it did report the call I captured the url and attached it. Also, when looking at the layout service at the REST endpoint I see three available extensions: PCHPrintSOE PCHPrintSOEv101 PCHExportSOE. When I click on the PCHPrintSOEv101 it comes back as invailed url. I have attached a screen shot of this. Any ideas would be of great help; its much appreciated.

you should use the PChPrintSOE.

The PchPrintSOE101 is a special version for ArcGIS Server 10.1

Could you post/mail the verbose ArcGIS server log if you still have problems with the PChPrintSOE extension?

Thanks for getting back to me. I have been using the PCHPrintSOE and it is what I am having trouble with; just was curious what the PCHPrintSOEv101 was, now it make sense. I have posted my server log, and the url again from Fiddler when the Advance Print Widget was able to be called the one time. Again thanks for working with me on this.

Could you check if the "printurl" is correctly configure in the PChprintWidget.xml?
Maybe it's using an older version from your browser cache.

Hi Tom,

I did some reconfiguration in the PCprintWidget.xml and can now get the widget to appear when clicked, and can go through the whole print dialog. There are however still some issues. first, it is posting the pdf to my web server with its proper name (insight.teamworksintl.net), but on the get procedure it is not using the correct name, its using the server machine name (TWIWEB01). This results in an "Server not Found" error. I have attached a screen shot showing this. If I change the server name in the url to insight.teamworksintl.net (the post server name), it will return the pdf.

Second, only the base map appears on the pdf. None of my services/layers appear. In the arcgisoutput folder there is the pdf and an mxd. When I open up the mxd only the basemaps appear, just like in the pdf.

I attached my Fiddler results for the Post url and the Get url. I also posted the Widget debug file. Thanks again for all your help on this, I think we are close.
