Preview of two great new widgets coming out mid January 2011

I have been working hard on two great new widgets that I want you to preview. The final versions will be made available Mid January 2011 and submitted to the Flex a Widget competition.

The first is a new route widget for FlexViewer 2.2

Its' feature include:

Up to ten stops that can be added to the map interactively or by single line address matching using Bing geocoder.
Up to ten point barriers that can be added in the same fashion as stops.
Interactively added stops and barriers are automatically reverse geocoded.
You can calculate by time or distance and optionally use best sequence.
Route segments can be individually clicked in the directions list and visualized using a polyline animation (Thanks to Mark Deaton).
The big deal for this widget is its' printing capability. Both direct printer output and PDF output are supported. Multi page output with headers and footers and the option to include the large route image are all included. The individual direction segments have maneuver arrows that are included by default but can optionally be turned off. Things like configuring alternating directions background color can also be configured.

So if you are a developer and don't care about routing but want to know how to do moderately advanced multi page printing and AlivePDF techniques than this widget is for you.

The second one is a new infoTemplate for featurelayers.

The Attachment Relate Info Window Widgets' features include:

Ability to specify which fields are displayed
Specify one link field that will display as a clickable text or an actual image in the info window
Buttons at the bottom of the window for Zooming to feature, querying attachments, querying related features or tables
Attachments are preview only and are displayed in a custom grid popup not the standard attachment inspector.
Relates are initially displayed in a grid that allows for the selection of which related feature you want to preview and then when you choose the one you want to see then a floating datagrid is displayed with the related records.

Great widget! I have some questions and thoughts for future updates......

1) Instead of having to click the 'Done' button to open a related table could it be made to open with a double click?

2) Resize-able window that contains the list of related tables...

3) I could not find anywhere in your code about how it alphabetizes the fields in related tables - I would prefer to disable this feature.

4) Keep the window with the related tables open even once a table is selected. I have numerous tables to access and it would be nice not to have to re-enter this window each time...

5) Is it possible to include fields from a related table in the little pop-up that appears when you click on a feature. If this was possible it would greatly reduce the need/dependency to access related tables over and over...

Just some thoughts.....

Once again, you have created a great tool(s) and I, along with everyone else I'm sure, truly appreciates your continued effort..

I will make note of these suggestions. As for number 3, the reason you could not find any code where I order the results is because I don't do anything with the results but display them how I get them back from the server. I am trying not to get involved in managing the related tables data at all in my code.

I've been using the AttRelateInfoWinWidget based on the help you had previously provided... again, thanks for that.

The widget is exactly what I needed. But now I have another problem that I am hoping you could help me with.

I have the code I need for the widget in a FlexViewer instance and I also have other code that I developed in a FlashBuilder Flex API. I would like to bring the two together and have tried to find a way to implement your AttRelateInfoWinWidget into the Flex API.

I had thought it would be reasonably straight forward but now know it is not.

Should I be looking to convert my other code to a widget, or is there a reasonble way to get your widget into the Flex API? I have a short deadline and will probably just end up using two separate applications with unrelated URL's.

Again, your help and input is treasured.

I am using your RelateWidget for two separate layers. One is for a property layer - works perfect. The other layer is a building poly file with no related records but I have images attached to the buildings. So, I want to use your pop-up to simply view the images - and that part works great. Is there a way that I can remove the 'Show Related' button for one layer (the building poly) but still keep it for another layer (the actual property layer)? I seem to think not since each layer has it's own config file and this would likely need to be hard-coded into the mxml, correct?

Many thanks for these widgets, and the many others you've kindly shared.

Question for you: Would it be possible to "wire" the query-related-records functionality of your Relate Info window to work with your enhanced Identify tool? I want to look into it but thought I would check with you about how doable it is before wasting a lot of time.

I'd just like to consolidate how the end-user gets info from map features. In my viewer there are now two ways to get info - Identify tool against layers in a dynamic mapservice and simply clicking on featurelayers.

Just a heads-up that in version 2.3 of the viewer, there will be support for pop-up windows on dynamic and tiled layers (in addition to the feature layers). This will allow for the consistent end-user experience that I think Mark (and others) are looking for.

Thanks for the info Bjorn. That's great news about 2.3. Two questions:

1. When will 2.3 be released?
2. Will the pop-ups for dynamic layers support querying related features?

I guess what I'm hoping for is similar behavior to what is offered in ArcMap when I use the Identify tool - layer attributes and list of related info. Robert's enhanced Identify tool is fantastic and has most of what I want (highlights the feature when I mouse-over the record, zoom-to when I click) but showing related records would be icing on the cake.

Hi Robert, thank you for all your work! I've implemented a lot of your other widgets successfully. I'm trying to implement attachment advanced window info and enabled attachments in the geodatabase. After enabling attachments, I get two files but don't know how to proceed from there. I don't know how to associate a file to a feature and storing in the geodatabase as a BLOB.

The config part looks like this:

My widget is for viewing attachments that are already loaded to the feature class in ArcMap or some other means. There is nothing special that you have to do be able to view attachments once they are loaded in a layer of the map service.

I want to show multiple\overlapping points\polygons (same lat-lon values\geometry) using the widget with 'next' and 'prev' buttons for the records? Is it possible to do this with your widget ?

This is not really feasible in this widget as the attributes are shown based on mouse events on the graphic. So if one graphic is covering up another graphic even if you have "autoMoveToTop" set to true on that graphic there is no guarantee that it will get to the top and allow mouse events.

Robert, I have implemented a variation of the routing widget you created and I have run into a small problem when performing a manual sort of the stops. In the widget I have created data can be added one of two ways, 1) from a queried dataset or 2) from an address a user has entered. Everything works with the sort as expected when only stops created from the dataset are available. However, once i add an address and then perform a sort, the address gets left out of the stops feature set, therefore the address is not included in the route. If I add stops via the dataset and address but do not sort them, then the routing works as expected. I feel as though I am missing something simple but I'm having trouble finding it.

Do you have any suggestions of what might be going on or what I should check? If it would help I can send you my widget code, just let me know.

Just speculating here but I would look at the promoteStop function and find:

if(rs2.AddressText.indexOf(String(stops.features.attributes.address)) > -1){

If it does not get past this if than the stop will never be added to the nstops FeatureSet.

Robert, that appears to be where the problems lies. The if statement is being called when I move a stop added from the dataset but not a stop added using an address. Now I just need to figure out what is going on. Thanks.

Thank you for your help. I got both the attachment and relate working in my FlexViewer. I follow this to enable attachments in geodatabase:

This is great for attachments related to features. My next question is, do you know how to view attachments in a related table? For example, I click on a point, see its related table, (attachment is already enabled in ArcMap for this sde table), and in the related table window,to the left of "Export to CSV" we see a paper clip for item on that table? Attached is where I click on milepost 17.2, get its descriptions for that mile post. In a related table showing permits near milepost 17.2, see the attachments related to that row.

Just be warned as esri have began depreciating the method I use for this widget I will have to look at this using the new PopUpInfo instead (that just means a longer wait as I will have to redevelop the widget).

Are you referring to the info and infoconfig attributes on the layer tag? These are not being deprecated. We've just deprecated SimpleInfoWin widget, but info and infoconfig are still useful as extension points for custom pop-ups.

I've moved an app from 2.2 to 2.3.1 so that I could take advantage of the new configurable popups. Problem is that I am using Robert's awesome relate tool on my parcel layer - and my parcel polygons cover all visible geometry. Turns out that my configured popups will only work if I disable the relate tool because the relate tool seems to take precedence over the popups. Even if I place my other layers overtop of the parcel polygons I am still unable to click on them and have a popup appear.

In my situation I have the parcel polygons always showing and I am not giving the user the option of removing them - just the way it has to be....

So, I am really hoping this can be resolved because I reaaaalllly don't care for the identify tool....

Perhaps the relate tool could be initiated by having to click on an icon in the header (just like the other tools) rather than just having it automatically be 'on' all of the time. This way the popups would work all the time automatically and only cease working when the relate tool is being used...

Here's a thought - having the 'relate tool' icon in the header bar change to another type of icon (indicating an ON position) when it is clicked - and thus enabling the relate feature. And then when the icon is clicked again it turns to an OFF icon and disables the relate feature.

At this point the relate tool is far more important than popups so I will have to stick with the identify tool for the time being.

I have no idea how demanding of a change to the code this is so I'm not sure if this is an unreasonable request but I thought I would put it out there....

edit: after thinking about this some more I do have another option - to give the user the ability to turn on and off the parcel layer - not the preferred solution but this could work in my case....

My Attachment Relate Info Window Widget uses basically the same triggering as the new PopUpInfo windows in 2.3. I find it strange that you can not have the parcel layer at the bottom of the map using my Attachment Relate Info Window Widget and other layers on top using PopUpInfo windows...

The idea about a button to trigger the widget is not feasible in the design of the my widget, so that's a no go.

Maybe you should show me how you are configuring both mine and the PopUps, by posting your config.xml.

I've tried putting the property layer as the bottom layer of all my layers (as above...) but your relate tool still overrides the popups. I only configured popups for a couple layers above just for testing - the civic is a point file and the zoning is a polygon.

I think I can get around this issue by allowing the user to turn on/off the property layer to be able to enable the popups - but it is not ideal since the property lines (I say lines because I have only the outline of the polygons showing...) should pretty much be always visible since that is the main purpose of my app...

I have setup a test case and can confirm what you are seeing. It seems that my code using the InfoTemplate has precedence over the PopUpInfo... There is an enhancement request right now that would allow there to be something like a next record button when multiple overlaping features are picked.

i am likely trying to do something that isn't conceptual correct.
i would love to have your thoughts and advise.

i have a pt layer and a table with multiple hyperlinks per pt.
in arcSDE i have joined the 2 together.
arcmap doesnt like this.
if i use the select by attribute it will say "2 records selected" but if i look at the attribute table i will see only one. (1:many joins are not supported).
however, if i use the hyperlink lightningbolt tool i get a list of the 2 hyperlinks in the 'jumpto' window.

outside of going thru the layer (1000s of pts) and moving the multiple attachments into the geoddatabase table as 'attachments', i am not sure how to do this and am not sure the powers that be would want the tifs 'stored outside' their master image directory.

if i create a pivot table then i have multiple fields that have imagenames.

i could go thru the images and turn them into multipage images (again a long process i dont have energy or time for)

this is why i thought maybe your relate-identify would be useful.

these tools are great, but I have question. I am just getting to the point where i feel comforstable editing tools and making them do things that I'd like to see. how hard is it going to be to switch this so that i can call the same widgets in an editing window and enable a user to edit, is it even possible or would i have to start from scratch?
