Does workgroup database have to be SQL Server?

I'm about to setup ArcGIS Server workgroup (10.5) and was wondering if my geodatabase as to be SQL Server or can I use another one, like Post SQL?  From what I've read, it sounds like it needs to be SQL Server and that it needs to be installed on the same server as my ArcGIS Server workgroup.  I just wanted to confirm before getting started.  Thanks!

Yes, SDE Workgroup will only work with SQL Server Express edition.

No, you can have a separate Database Server and ArcGIS Server. Having both on same server is not necessary.
