Shortlist v1 numbered points not displaying

I have created a story map for the projects in and around our city in four tabs. I am unable to create a service, so for now I am using shapefiles. Kind of a pain but I will resolve that issue later.

The issue I am having now is that 2 points are not showing up on the map (there might be more but those are the two I am working on).
The tab displays the number, the photo and a short description. IE shows it as a typical missing image icon but other browsers show no point. Any ideas?

Interesting looking project! It's OK to use shapefiles or CSV files in the 'shortlist' template you are using (in fact it currently doesn't support feature services). I can reproduce your issue with those two points in your app. When I zoom out so that places 37 and 38 are displayed in the Transit tab, I see that marker points are not being displayed for those two locations on the map: if I click on either of those places in the tab, I get a popup showing their location on the map but there's no colored marker symbol there.

At first I thought perhaps your installation of the shortlist template was missing the icon files for those two numbers, but I can access those via a URL directly using the URL pattern that matches the file names that the icons have in the Shortlist template download:

but what is odd is that I can't seem to access all the others via the URL pattern. If I go to your app and right-click one of the green marker symbols that is appearing, and get its URL, it is using a different naming convention than the two above (it has an underscore between Number and Icon):

In the Shortlist download all those icons have the same naming convention so I think some of the files have been renamed at your end but not all of them. Anyway, if you go to your /Shortlist/images/icons/green folder and rename the files for 37 and 38 to add an underline into their name I bet it will work OK.

Yay Rupert!!
I have started and stopped this project so many times waiting for input that I completely forgot that we had to add the underscore as the field name in the shapefile would not come in without it. Problem solved. I really appreciate your taking the time to review and recommend.

Hey when you are ready to public with the app, could you add a 'web mapping application' entry into ArcGIS Online to represent your app, like this one: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=6de17002eb9e4ad0bf014575d21e242e

Be sure to add 'story map', 'shorlist' and the name of your city and state into the Tags on the entry you add so that people who search ArcGIS Online for examples of story maps will be able to find your app.

With that in place, it will ensure that your app shows up in this search which returns story map apps in ArcGIS Online:

http://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=shortlist&t=content&sortField=avgrating&sortOrder=desc&focus=applications

and also enables your app to be added into a gallery.

(Note: Manually adding a web mapping application entry into ArcGIS Online to surface your app is totally optional and only needs doing if you deploy an app by downloading and self-hosting an app. If you use a hosted app like the map tour or swipe, then you don't need to add an entry like this in order for people to find your app when they search ArcGIS Online because ArcGIS Online automatically makes a web mapping application for you when you make a hosted app).

PS. You said: "I completely forgot that we had to add the underscore as the field name in the shapefile would not come in without it." That sounds a bit odd because you don't need to rename the icon files in the app in order to use a shapefile, and the names of those files are unrelated to the fields in the shapefiles that you can use to define the points in your shortlist web map.

Hi Rupert Essinger, I'm hoping you can help me with a similar problem. The points aren't rendering for my German Heritage story map (currently still under development). It is a copy of a template I've been using, and works fine even swapping in the webmap IDs from these working story maps: Greek Revival or Historic Barns. So the icons are accessible. The webmap that German Heritage is using is this one: 1302710fe2ce4ad1a25e94250a5fb323. The points show up fine there. I'm working with the dev story map files downloaded from Github. I don't see any errors when the story map loads in my browser. Any ideas? Thanks!

Nice work on your Shortlists! Very nice customization of Shortlist version 1. I had a look at your map

and the point data looks OK except that the PIC_URL field isn't populated. But the points should still draw. If you click on the places in your tabs a popup appears for them, so the locations are there. I think your Shortlist isn't finding the point icons like the other two are but I can't tell what is causing that.

Thank you very much for taking a look at them! I was playing around with it some more this morning, and tried putting a placeholder into the PIC_URL while my coworker cleans up the site photographs, but what finally brought the point markers back was changing the one site's null TAB_NAME to "something." When that one site had a blank TAB_NAME, the markers wouldn't render.
