Running Multiple Instances of ArcGIS Pro on the Same Desktop??

Often users work on multiple projects at a time. Each of these projects have their own ArcGIS Pro Projects. In this scenario the projects are completely unrelated.

Project A involves a heavy lift of geo-processing over a large area, which is going to take some time to complete
Project B involves a basic map showing site locations

While I in the middle of running the geo-processing for Project A, the user gets a call from the a client/customer for Project B. He/she needs a quick update for the map which would take <5 minutes. Unfortunately the GIS professional can’t open up the Project B ArcGIS Pro while Project A is running because it is their understanding that you cannot open 2 ArcGIS Pro sessions at one time.

Is there a work around for this?

What type of change are you looking at? Could you open project B in desktop?

Most tools can be run in Catalog. I find that it runs some tools much faster.

I have not found a way to open two projects.

Another solution can be to have a server or another computer that runs the long processes. We have a couple of computers that we can push longer processes too.

Long processes can be done async, it doesn't lock up your session but it prevents you from closing your project. Merging the projects is possible but not necessarily desirable, you end up with one huge project for every single thing you do. Running them on a server or other computer consumes another license, besides some processes take a long time and have lots of manual intervention (editing for instance), you still need to pause, do something else quickly and get back to your task. I think this is a massive oversight.

Agree with the OP. My workflow is such that I generally am running 2-3 instances of ArcMap, each doing something completely different. Pro isn't even worth the effort to download and install if you can't use it effectively. I'm curious why a)Esri is pushing Pro so hard and b)simultaneously eliminating basic features?

Sadly, this issue goes back 18+ months on GeoNet (Only one instance of ArcGIS Pro allowed?) and has been around since the first betas of ArcGIS Pro. Back during the beta days, over 2+ years ago, there was some lip service paid to it, i.e., "we are working on it," but those words have been ringing hollow. Who knows, maybe 1.3 will answer our calls. Unfortunately, we are still stuck with a single instance with 1.3.

One option to explore - you can run a single instance of ArcGIS Pro on up to 3 different machines at the same time with a single Named User License. Not exactly running two instances of ArcGIS Pro on a single machine but if you had separate PC/laptop not being used...a workaround for the time being.

My workflows often require multiple instances of ArcMap running. This is a big limitation for me, for example - while working during a recent flood emergency I had multiple maps open and being customized on demand. and switching between them responding to engineers requests and queries.

Yes, we do have plans to make this work at a future release.

No, we are not ignoring your requests at all.

Basically, there are technical limitations that prevent this from being possible at the current time.

We need to work around those limitations to make this possible.

In the meantime, you can run your GP from "regular" desktop (or do offline GP) - remember that Pro is a complement to existing desktop, they can run side by side.

None taken but it's an option to consider. Refer to Jeremy Wright's answer below for a future enhancement of this workflow need.

This seems like such a fundamental requirement for a typical GIS user, I'm kind of surprised that this is considered a "future enhancement" and not a bug that would have prevented release in the first place. I'm really, really, trying to "Drink the Pro Kool Aid", sitting here staring at a blank screen waiting for Pro to grind through a map import, wishing that I could fire up another instance of Pro so I could work on something else. Wonder what other critical tasks we've come to depend on working in Arc Map will now be considered "Future Enhancements"?

I was trying to find an "ArcGIS Ideas" request for this but did not find one directly. However, there is an "idea" that includes this request, here:

It might be worth voting this up or it might be worth creating a new idea for multiple instances.
