Public Information Map Twitter working?

Is anybody else having a problem viewing tweets on the Public Information Map template?

I have tried a number of queries using different key words, dates and locations. The icon keeps spinning next to the search button, but no twitter icons appear on the map.

Jeff_Archers comment on the application info page (link above) suggests changing the keywords and page count for Twitter in config.js. I've tried that and the map still does not display any geolocated tweets. I've also made sure to download the latest version of the application so I have the most recent twitter.js.

The US Weather and Twitter Map displays a number of twitter icons when I query the same hashtags.

I came here hoping there was a fix to the twitter feed problem, it is very frustrating for me. What I have seen from my own little bit of research is that while twitter is an amazing tool for capturing information for a specific microsecond of time and place, getting people to geolocate their tweets is a lot harder than one might imagine. The recent snow event in Seattle had local twitter folks diligently hashtagging consistently and prolifically, but since the majority do not turn on their location services, the tweets are of little use. Folks who upload their photos to a photosharing site like flickr via their mobile device, have the option of turning on location by each image. The same thing goes with the web based upload. These pictures are more carefully located and error checked by the user, not the consumer of the location based service. As a person who is looking at the use of twitter streams to validate and monitor weather events, I am slowly realizing that the common twitter user output is better for analyzing general trends (tsunamis are bad), but not for on the ground validation (oh my god, look at the wave).

Sigh.

I wonder if Esri is interested in pulling in instagram locations soon, that seems to be the hottest app out there today.

Thanks very much for responding to this. Good to hear it was such a simple problem that led to the disaster layers displaying. I look forward to hosting some of my own services and including them in my application using this template.

Judging by those links to the twitter developer forum, it doesn't look like the issues related to querying and displaying geolocated tweets will be resolved soon. Even if they do resolve the current issues, the forum posts from twitter employees suggest that future changes may cause new problems. The more unreliable standard social media feeds appear, the more appealing the VGI functionality becomes an appealing way for users to contribute content.

This train of though leads me to one more question if you don't mind...

Would it be possible for the VGI pop-up windows displaying links to photos or videos or websites to instead display the content directly within the pop-up window? My knowledge related to this is limited, but it seems feasible. I think the functionality of the VGI pop-ups to display media content directly, instead of linking to a separate browser tab, would provide an ideal means for users to easily and effectively share content, and ultimately help web mapping applications based on the PIM achieve their objective.

The disaster layers were pointing at a server from the Pacific Disaster Center that changed addresses. We made the change to the live app and the zip file to make sure the layers display.

As for the Twitter issue, there are several bugs that have been logged on the Twitter end that need to be addressed for us to get the results we're looking for in our apps. I've included the links below.

Thanks for the responses. This template has really helped jump-start a project I am beginning to work on and I appreciate all the hard work that goes into it. I look forward to incorporating tweets into my final application.

I have one more question about the Public Information Map template currently available from arcgis.com. Can anyone else view the layers? Maybe it is because there haven't been any earthquakes, wildfires, eruptions or cyclones recently, but I can't get anything to display. Thanks again for your help on this issue. It is much appreciated.

Hi all,

We are aware of the issue with Twitter in the Public Information Map template and are working to get it fixed today.

As for the instant display in the PIM of tweets from your phone, that is not supported by Twitter in the search API - which we are currently using in the PIM. In theory, it would work with access to the full twitter "firehose" via Twitter or GNIP. Getting and using firehose access is technically challenging and expensive, so I wouldn't look for that functionality in the PIM anytime soon.

I think that you're onto something. I'm experiencing the same problem with the Public Information Map twitter component that you described.

I'm not sure what the problem is but I stumbled across the same behaviour using one of the ArcGIS Online templates. This app that I created from the twitter template on ArcGIS Online does a search on geolocated tweets too:

A few colleagues and I have tweeted several geolocated tweets from our mobile devices in the Toronto area with #socialgis in the tweet today. These should show up in the application when #socialgis is searched but they do not. The only search phrases that I have found that return anything are for and the. This is really odd.

This was working last week but for some reason it is not now. Perhaps the updates to ArcGIS Online on Friday have caused an issue.

Does anyone else know why this is not working?
