Adding Lots/OtherTypes Parcels as Separate Map Layers

How do you display the Parcels that aren't Tax Parcels (or Type doesn't equal 7) as separate layers in your Map?

On the sample template provided by ESRI, it looks like the layer is referencing ParcelFabric_Parcels, and then using a Definition query to select just the Type=6 for lots. What I don't understand is how to get that ParcelFrabric_Parcels onto the Table of Contents in the first place. When you look in the geodatabase, there is "ParcelFrabic", but no way to select the classes out separately.

It seems like this would be a no brainer, but after scouring google, the white paper, and the collective knowledge of my superiors, we still can't seem to figure it out. I found something close, such as making a new definition query layer, but it doesn't seem to be designed this way.

Thanks for your help in advance. Hopefully I am not the only one having this issue.

Copy and paste layer, then change Definition Query.

Rather than starting a new thread or hijacking someone else's, wanted to ask one more question.

We are going to import parcel polygons into our fabric one Assessor map at a time, so normally there is a chunk of parcels to import. Well when I import them all in unjoined, and then go to join them, ArcMap wants to join them as a chunk. Because of this, the borders don't always line up just right. I attached a picture to show you an overlapping border, with 1 parcel selected so you can see what it is doing.

What is the best way to fix this? There is no way to tell ArcMap just to use one of the borders? Is there any easy way of fixing this? If your not sure, no worries.

Just make sure that when you join them to the Fabric, you make all the appropriate line-point connections. This will ensure that there are no gaps or overlaps.

Oh ok, I see what your saying now, and your completely right, it's just that you assumed I knew what right clicking and using "Save as Layer File" would do. For some reason I thought that would just duplicate the data, but it seems as though its just REFERENCING the data, so then I can use my definition query, and even if I change parcels around, the new layer file will change with it.

I'm still pretty new to GIS, so I guess it's always good to assume the person asking the question might not know every step to take when describing an answer, and would be good to spell it out, just in case. I know you might be afraid of insulting someone, but they can deal with it. Your on here helping, and that's pretty awesome!

No worries, I'm more than happy to lend some helping (hopefully) advice. I was right in your position not too long ago, particularly with trying to figure out this parcel fabric thing. You will have to simply change or make a new definition query to represent each parcel type you want to have in your .mxd you are working from. Once you've created the query and changed your symbolization to represent that parcel type you will have to save that as a new layer file and add that layer file into your map document. Setting up templates also helps for editing. No you cannot simply just add the parcels into a map document without adding the lines, points, and control points as well. Kind of a bummer, but from what I understand it is coming in 10.1.

I am sorry but your reply didn't really help. You told me I need to create a layer file for each parcel type, and that is exactly what I am asking how to do. ParcelFabric_Parcels isn't just listed in ArcCatalog for me to drag over. But somehow in ESRI's Tax Parcel template, they have managed to create a table of contents layer that references just the parcels out of the fabric, and then they use the definition query to only display the parcels that are NOT tax parcels.

If you reference my attached pictures, you will see what I mean. They have a layer listed under the main fabric layer that references TaxParcels_Parcels, but labeled "Lots and Subdivisions". If you right click on the "Tax_Parcels" portion of the FABRIC LAYER, it also shows the same source, TaxParcels_Parcels.

Thanks for any other advice you or anyone else could provide.

Depending on how you want to display in the TOC, you will have to create a layer file for each parcel type in your .mxd. We don't have tax parcels so all of our "lots" are parcel type of 2 with individual lot types to seperate lots, parks, etc. Also, you cannot simply just add the parcels without adding the entire fabric in 10.0. This will be coming in 10.1 though.....
