Does Installing ArcSDE on a server separate from SQL Server use additional licensing?

Forgive this question, but I went from an environment with an ELA to an environment without one, and so licensing really was an afterthought.  If I have am using both the web services and the SDE components of ArcGIS Server, and if I want to install SDE on the application server separate from the SQL Server box, does that entail additional licensing from Esri?  I wouldn't think so, but this guy on stackexchange suggests otherwise.  Another interpretation of the comment would be that having ArcSDE installed on a machine separate from ArcGIS Server would be the trigger that entails separate licensing.  How exactly does licensing work at 10.1?
