Esri maps through ArcMap

I've imported layer files from Esri through ArcMap to use in my project and when I try to preform any functions with it (specifically Intersect in Model Builder) it gives an error. Is this because the layer file cannot be changed or is protected in some way?

Hi Allison,

Are the layer files you added to ArcMap referencing map services? In that case you cannot use them for analysis.
