Question about the "Story Language" in the Story Insights

I was looking through the documentation, and this might be a duh question - but I'm trying to get a better understanding of why my StoryMaps are getting flagged by the story language function.

We have quite a few StoryMaps that may include other languages, but the primary language of the StoryMap is still English. A lot of these are topics on history, culture, etc. For example - I have a StoryMap that someone created on Antonín Dvořák that is in English, but it's getting flagged by the "detect language" in Insights. There are some people and place names in Czech, but nothing else.

Are these most likely getting flagged just because of the place names and people names? There might be images in the StoryMap that have other languages on in (that we'll describe in the alt text) but other than proper nouns, there really isn't another language being used. So I'm just curious if there is something else that it's looking at.

In the documentation, it just says "Detected languages—Languages found in your content", so I'm not entirely sure what it's using as a factor to flag the project as an issue.

If it is the proper nouns that it's flagging for the most part, I will probably float a StoryMap idea to allow this to be skipped in the Insights.

Any thoughts are welcome!

Thanks @SaraJL for running those tests! I think that gives us enough information to go back and try to tackle this on our end. Thank you for reporting this. Once this is fixed, I'll reply back to this thread to give you an update.

I went back to the StoryMap - all of ours register as "English - United States" or "English - English" on default, depending on which setting you are looking at.

I went back to the story settings > confirmed that it says English > saved it > refreshed the Insights panel. It looks like it's no longer registering with the flag.

Just to do a test, I picked a StoryMap that I know doesn't have any non-English proper nouns for the most part - it doesn't register with the detect language flag issue. I never updated the language settings for this one, it's just the default.

I haven't had an opportunity to test a lot of the StoryMaps, so I'm not sure to what degree it's registering the non-English proper nouns. I've been going through our public StoryMaps gallery and adding alt-text to images - and it's just the trend that I noticed based on those I've worked in.

Hi @SaraJL thank you for this question!

Some of the suggestions in the Insights panel can be taken as recommendations more so than checks or flags that need to be addressed mandatorily by you as the author for the story. We don't prevent you from publishing the story if these issues are surfaced up and recommended to you from the Insights panel. The ones to be taken more seriously by you and your organization would be the Accessibility section.

Having said that, it seems like this specific issue you've raised is a bug on our end. I'd like this to be fixed so it would be helpful if you can share some details.

Having gone through your story, we're curious if you can share what the language is set to in the story settings modal in this story's builder. For e.g. This is what the language for my story looks like (as seen in attachment).

Can you go ahead and perform the following steps:

1. Update the language to English - United States one more time and save the settings in the modal

2. Click Insights in the builder header and check if the suggestion under Experience still show up or if its addressed?

If it was addressed, I would like to know if you're experiencing this against any other story or if this was specific to this one.

Apologies for the inconvenience with this issue, but we'll get this sorted.
