Popups: Is it just me, or is it all a bit bad really?

OK- When you publish a service from Pro you get;

That would imply to me that you can control all popups that may reference the service you have just published from Pro.

but, no - Overwrite a web feature layer—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation states:

"Web maps store pop-ups and symbology separately from web layers. Pop-ups stored in the web map will not be updated if the web layer is overwritten with a newly configured pop-up. If the schema of a web layer changes, you may need to reconfigure the web map's pop-ups and symbology."

So what is the point? It appears the only way to updated popups to appear on webmaps and applications based on these is to remove the originating map service and re-add.

Our work AI tells me we can zap the JSON of the webmaps and apps to reset to the initial, but have I missed the big red button that says "update popups from source" ?

We were thinking of moving a lot of our external apps to be in AGOL, but with the added overhead of updating the services several times (Portal Web map, then re-add that web map to AGOL, force apps to recognize new popups) we may have to rethink this.

Or am I totally wrong? IS there some magic I've missed?

We've been wrestling with similar architecture questions. While schema changes aren't ideal, they're a reality: something as simple as adding a coded-value to a domain requires republishing our services.

Our operating assumption has been that 'getting it right' in ArcPro prior to publishing is ideal; get the symbology, labels, and popups all setup as best we can, then publish (and carefully guard that that Pro Project or .mapx file for republishing). This has required us to remove and re-add the Portal Item to the web map after republishing, but this has been preferable to manually re-configuring the popups everytime!

We've 'zapped the JSON' before too, but were under the impression that such a workflow was 'not standard, nor supported'.

That said, we've yet to really consider the impact on AGOL -- we usually only resort to adding Enterprise data to AGOL if there's something in the latest releases that we haven't yet upgraded in our Portal enviornment.

It's not even schema changes - those are few and far between - it could be something simple as a discovered typo or a web link that needs up dating. As we know editing the JSON is a way, surely there could be a button to enable this to be done by the system - it ain't hard really.

@AdrianMarsden, maybe I'm misunderstanding, but you can control the pop-ups only as long as you do not customize them in Map Viewer. That's what the quoted part from Overwrite Web Layer means. I.e., if you've customized them in Map Viewer, it's safe to assume you wanted the pop-ups to be that way in that map?

Like @D_Atkins said, format the pop-ups before publishing (and do not change them in Map Viewer) if you want those changes to propagate to everywhere you're using the layer straight from the source without customizations. Another method would be to change whatever (symbology, pop-ups) at the item level (go to the Visualization tab on the item page) and save. You can also just reset back to the source layer properties from the Properties tab in Map Viewer:

The problem as far as I am aware is this-Publish the first time with configured popups and its all good. Make some changes to those popups in the project later and republish and those changes do not carry through, the only way to get those changes into the webmaps/associated apps is to remove them and add them back in. This is a faff, particularly if you are dealing with multiple apps.

Ah, interesting, it may be that we are a bit backward here and still using the classic viewer - at least until August when we finally move from 10.8 - so I may have not got up to speed - I'll take a deeper look. Thanks

At least for me, this was the 'aha' moment that wasn't clear from the documentation or from the ArcPro 'overwrite' warning message.

I think I need to wait until we are up to 11.5 to revisit and test - then to document our processes, as it looks like this is purely down to our old version - I have just tested in 10.9 (OK, so still old, but it was the first version with 'new' viewer) and that seemed to honour the changed popup - at least in a web map - so I assume it will do so in a full Web App
