new query layer with parameters

Trying to create a query layer with paramter as explained in

https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/help/mapping/layer-properties/define-parameters-in-a-query-layer.htm 

However the sql verify fails due to the double collon :: needed for defining a parameter in arcpro

 

Error: Underlying DBMS error[[Microsoft][ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server][SQL Server]Incorrect syntax near '::'.]

Agreed. Yes this resource guide is insufficient and lacking in background information on the proper use of :: since it is not a standard SQL query language. Therefore, I submitted feedback on the article. Here is the reply I received:

 

"I’m sorry that it wasn’t clear for you. You are correct, the “::” is not standard SQL notation. It is in fact an ArcGIS construct.

• Discrete parameters work with numeric (integer or double), date, or string values and are prefixed by the keyword ::. Did they just call out the same documentation I was providing feedback that it was confusing and inadequate? So much for the help. Ugh.
