Network Dataset: implement terrain in costs

Hi all,

I would like to create a Network Dataset for an area with rough terrain. I think that the travel times are not representative when the steepness of roads is not included in the dataset.

I have the TREX DEM model to add to the dataset.

The dataset is built and has a traveltime attribute as Cost.

Is it possible to add terrain features to the Network Dataset? And if so, how?

All I can find when I search Network Dataset & Elevation is the Z-values for overpasses. This is not wat I am looking for.

The features that make up a network dataset can be true three D. That is polyline with Z. However how you take the 3D and turn into useful network costs is up to you. For example, you can compute slopes for each line and use it come up with your travel cost based on vehicle type. Do note that DEM's do not have built features, so you will not be able to figure out bridge heights or tunnels on a road based on a DEM.

So, yes, you can add terrain attributes to a network dataset like any other cost, restriction or descriptors and use them in routing.
