ClassesBreaks with Features Service from ArcGIS Online vs. ArcGIS Server

I am required to migrate a couple of oversized feature services from ArcGIS Online for Organizations to ArcGIS Server. The web application created using ClassBreaksRenderer works fine with a Feature Service from ArcGIS Online, but not with ArcGIS Server.

Do you have to publish a feature service through Portal or ArcGIS Online in order to use ClassBreaksRenderer?

I would greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide.
