Statute Miles vs Nautical Miles

Question

When asked to calculate miles from a point, how would I know which one to use?

Statute Miles or Nautical Miles

I am assuming Statute Miles would be more accurate but that I would ask here just to be sure.

I'm no sailor but my understanding is that a nautical mile is greater in length than a statute mile so unless you're sailing the seven seas, I would use the "land-lover's" statute mile. 😁
