Upgrade Enterprise site with only web adaptor to 10.9.1

Looking to get some guidance on upgrading an ArcGIS Enterprise site from 10.7.1 to 10.9.1 when the existing site only uses a single web adaptor. As it stands the Portal and Server site both share the same web adaptor (arcgis) and as dictated by ESRI documentation, this isn't supported anymore. My thought was to follow the below workflow to complete this upgrade, but was looking for any additional guidance or advice.

1. Unregister existing web adaptor with ArcGIS Server

2. Upgrade Portal

3. Uninstall/Re-install web adaptor for Portal --> use "arcgis" name

4. Upgrade ArcGIS Server (AGS)

5. Install web adaptor for AGS --> use "server" name

6. Upgrade datastore

Question: Can Esri Professional Services assist to rename the webadaptors ???

Answer: Yes, Esri Professional Services has tools and methods that can be used to rename the webadaptors, the customer can reach out to Esri Professional Services for assistance.

1. Uninstall the webadpator

2. Upgrade Portal

3. Install the new webadpator for portal https with name "portal" and configure the webadpator

4. Upgrade ArcGIS Server

5. Install the new webadaptor for arcgis server https with name "server" and configure the webadaptor

6. upgrade the datastore

Upgrade your ArcGIS Enterprise portal—ArcGIS Enterprise | Documentation for ArcGIS Enterprise
note: look the steps under "Perform an upgrade of your portal deployment"
you will see that it asks to uninstall the webadaptor before doing the portal upgrade and the arcgis server upgrade, follow the same steps.

Thank you for the clarification on the order of upgrading each component. One question I had regarding the naming of each web adaptor, currently in the existing Enterprise site, the single web adaptor uses the name "arcgis" (the default name). If I were to change the web adaptor for both Portal and Server to something other than "arcgis" as you suggested, would this not cause issues with the existing services in the deployment?

Thank you for this input. With the change to the new naming pattern for the Web Adaptors, what will happen to the content that is already in Portal site from the existing federated server? As it stands now, those services use the "arcgis" web adaptor name (EX: https://gis.domain.org/arcgis/rest/services/pointsLayer ). Will I need to un-federate & re-federate my AGS with Portal? Will I need to remove and re-add these layers?

Asking b/c I had problems with the webadaptor on two separate machines, one portal and one server, last night trying to upgrade to 11.2 and had to roll back to snapshots.

@EricKriener - the 11.2 documentation says that you can uninstall / install the Web Adaptor after the Portal Upgrade and after the Server upgrade. I have always done in this order as well and I have never run into any issues.

@EricKriener I don't think they is a definitive answer once the documentation has conflicting information, But I have been doing this way for many years, uninstall and install the Web Adaptor after the Upgrade and never had issues, but I know of folks that followed the documentation to the letter and uninstall the Web Adaptor before the Upgrade and also never had issues.
