Arcpy update group layer metadata

I am trying to update a group layer title using arcpy. The code throws no errors and the group layer metadata has read & write permissions. For some reason the metadata of the layer is not actually being updated.  Any help / suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!

For items stored in a project, metadata changes aren't truly saved until the project is saved; if the project is closed without saving, the changes you made to the map's metadata will be lost.

worth trying to add a project save as well
