Switch on individual layers of a map with a button

Hello all,

I have loaded a web map with different layers into Experience Builder to create a WebApp. In this web app, individual layers of the web map should be able to be switched on and off with a button or a switch.

Is this possible and do you have any tips on how I can implement this?

Hi, when adding the map widget to your Experience, there is an option to enable the "Layers" tool which will allow the end user of the app to toggle visibility of layers.

It's different with a button that quickly turns on/off a layer. If a map has multiple layers, users might want a quick button to turn on a frequently used layer.

Out of curiosity did you figure out a way to do this. I sort of have a hacked method using the filter widget but it's not pretty. The people we are making the map for really don't like the layer widget, they want easy to click buttons.

Im not sure if the question is still active, but you can add the Widget Map Layers.

You can connect this Widget to Interact with the map widget (choose the correct one).

It also has an option 'Toggle layer visibility' if you switch it on, you have an additional option to use tick boxes.

Now you users of the app can easily switch layers on and/or off.

Holy cow this is really old and am just seeing this now- sorry. I went back to see how I accomplished this and couldn't actually find the application where it was implemented. We eventually went a different direction so it just went away. If I recall it was setting up filters that would filter everything/nothing when enabled so instead of actually turning off/on the layers it was really filtering all the features. I know there are other posts about layer widgets and whatnot but people still seem to want big ol' buttons to turn things on and off.

Has this been solved? We can use a button in Dashboards to toggle layers. But not in ExB. Is that the case, or is there a way to do this? We want something similar to a button. That when clicked, it displays a filter of the layer, or toggle layers off and others on.

It is a shame this hasn't been solved by now - I see many people asking for a button to trigger a single or multiple layers at once. We are using maps with rich content of 20+ layers. However, people usually need only 3 "scenes / scenarios". Instead of force-feeding us Layers widget, just PLEASE make a button action to toggle different layer states ON/OFF with a single click.

Some workarounds / ways to do this despite ESRI:

Filters are a workaround, but if you enable all of the layers, then filter them invisible, it sacrifices a lot of performance and seams pointless.
How to: Layers in question should be loaded on start (e.g. toggled ON). Then Filter widget can be styled like a button with a custom icon and all. You should add reverse SQL expression --> like asking to filter for something that's not there. I use this: (OBJECTID IS NULL)
Finally, make sure to toggle "Apply this filter automatically" for it to be applied on load.

Separate maps in different pages are another hack, but this makes me create, store and maintain 2-3 sets of maps literally adding an exponential load on map creators gis engineers.

There's a solution to this. Using Bookmarks. But the Bookmarks are very limited in ability to style. So the Bookmarks don't match the style of the App. Bookmarks should have the same styling capabilities as buttons. That said. Add a Bookmark. Configure the Bookmark to display only the layer(s) you want displayed when Bookmark is clicked. I have real life Apps that I won't use Bookmarks, because of the lack of styling issue. If looks aren't as important as functionality, or you can change the entire style of the app for one widget. Bookmarks are a solution.

I have found bookmarks to be great for this however do you know of a way to make the bookmark show a specific filtered layer, it seems to not carry the filtered status of the specific layer when setting up the bookmark. I swore I got this to work before but have not been able to get it to work since?

It should work as you described. In the Web Map, duplicate layers. Then Filter the layers. In the Bookmarks. Choose what Layers show when the Bookmark is clicked. My biggest issue with tis is the styling. The look of buttons can't be styled to look like other items. Besides that, it works great

One item I would add to the dream list here would be, if not for buttons to change layers, for there to be a setting in bookmarks to NOT CHANGE extent when you switch bookmarks. This setting would effectively make that layer button dream come true without needing to change much else...

If this is possible and I'm just being silly and haven't noticed it, I would gladly be corrected on this.

I believe your dream is a reality 🙂

You do not have to change the extent of a Bookmark.

Instead, you just change layer visibilities, without changing the extent.

This is not intuitive, as a Bookmarks main purpose is usually to change the extent.

But in this case, just don't move the map, and your dream will come true.

This is very close to the functionality that I'm looking for, but I can not see a way to have a bookmark not change the extent/zoom. I can successfully set the layer visibility but the map interface to set a bookmark makes me choose what the map is showing. Once it's live if I zoom and pan around in the app, then click a bookmark, it will zoom to that extent (while successfully turning the right layers off). What am I missing here? A checkbox somewhere?

How is this solution any different than toggling layers in a Layer List Widget? Maybe this is a solution for you. But it is nowhere near what I'm trying to do. Unless I'm missing something. The Bookmarks solution isn't really a good solution either. It doesn't have Triggers and Actions to widgets like List or others. Can you explain what I'm missing?

I must have misunderstood what you were trying to do. First time Exp Builder user, so I am still learning about all of the functionality of the App. Hope you get a usable solution.

Hi MauryT. I found this thread looking for I think the same thing; I am using a widget controller that contains several Map Layer widgets. Each ML widget is customized to show only related layers. For example, I have a ML widget for toggling different classifications of building polygons on and off. Same for parking, public safety, etc. However, I have a few layers that don't fall into a category--they're standalone. I need a button in the widget controller that, instead of showing a Map Layer widget that contains just a single layer, simply turns that layer on and off upon clicking the button. Otherwise, I'm asking the user to click twice to turn the layer on.

To show you what I mean, this is desired behavior, a Map Layer widget that shows specific layers that are related.

This is case, I have a single layer. Instead of opening a layer-list, I want the button to simply turn the visibility on and off. As is, using the Map Layer widget amounts to asking the user to click multiple times--once to open the layer-list, and another to click the lone layer present.

It would be great if you could simply put a button there and as an action, toggle the visibility of a single layer. That would do it.

Use Bookmarks to Toggle layer visibility.

This can be done for one layer, or many layers at one time.

It does have flaws, but it solves what is asked in this Post.

I think the gaps in the bookmarks functionality make it not an answer to this question. I could not find a way to utilize the bookmark work around without it resetting the zoom/pan of the map (I really tried but couldn't find a way to do it, if I'm missing a setting or something let me know). That makes it not really the same thing as turning on/off layers since the map basically resets each time. I ended up just using the ArcGIS Maps SDK for Javascript because I really just wanted a simple map with buttons to turn multiple layers on and off and the SDK allows for full control of styling and functionality.

I agree, Bookmarks are not perfect in many ways.

But it does toggle layers on and off.

Which is what many of the people in the Post are wanting.

I wouldn't recommend, to the masses, custom coding with the ArcGIS SDK.

But if it works for you, great 🙂

Is there a way to keep the zoom/pan the same when switching using bookmarks? If so then this is really close but I couldn't figure that out. Lots of options though so maybe I missed it. Yeah SDK isn't for everyone and there is a ton of functionality in Experience Builder that makes using that unnecessary (which I guess is the point).

I've added a bookmark widget to the Widget Controller. I've configured the bookmark widget to show a single layer. I don't want the zoom extents to change, but instead just behave like the Map Layers widget that toggles layers on and off by clicking the tick box. This is what I encounter.

1. After adding the Bookmarks Widget to the Widget Controller and configuring it to custom display only one layer, clicking the widget causes the Bookmarks Widget window to appear.

2. A second click is needed to display the layer data.

Clicking on the bookmark again does not hide the layer, so I'm missing something there?

Here's an example of adding the Bookmarks Widget straight to the map.

1. This time clicking the Bookmarks Widget causes the layer data to appear without having to reveal the widget in the Widget Controller.

Once displayed, I cannot get the layer to turn off by clicking the Bookmark again.

We have the Bookmarks Widget working in another app in which it carousels between multiple bookmarks, once of which is the map with no layers selected. This effectively the off state that I'm looking for, but it requires clicking on another button rather than the same one to toggle on/off.

I'm still hunting, but if you can share anything I might need to make it work the way I'm shooting for, much appreciated.

I recently found this data viewer and it looks like someone has figured out how to make map layers visible with a 'button'. Any thoughts on how these 'buttons' conditionally filter the data being shown in the maps? Hi! I have been scouring (perhaps not thoroughly enough) the community with the same question, within the AGO Dashboard>> a "button" element that will allow a layer to turn on and off. I didn't see any solution other than utilizing ExpBuilder.

To no avail, I'd like to share my simple workaround w/in the dashboard. I hope this helps someone.

It took me a while to figure out what you are talking about, but I got there 🙂
This looks a lot like my reverse filter method where layer is loaded and then filtered out. Does this also load all the layer data to the map straight away?
See, if I am working with large datasets, then layers that are switched off, dont take up any resources. Once you load everything in, the app starts to slow down.
My reverse filter method loads all data and hides it by filtering it away. However, it LOADS IT ALL to the memory and thus is very unusable with large datasets. Do selectors behave better?

The closest I think I have come to this is having multiple map widgets in a section and each view containing the specific combination of layers I need. This acts like bookmark, but to keep the map extents the same you use action triggers. So when the extent changes in one map, the zoom changes in the other maps. Name the view as desired (e.g. "View Property Data" etc.) then use the Views Navigator to change the layers. So when you click on each view the map layers change without it affecting the map extent.
