Modify an existing style (.stylx)

I have a style that I need to update (mainly colors). In Catalog Pane I right click on the Style>manage.

Every time I try and modify, Pro does not let me change anything. Almost like its locked.

I tried making a copy of the existing style and modifying that. No luck.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, removing a style item from a style file does result in that item being deleted. The best workaround would be to copy-paste that item into your 'favorites' style, where you could save it for future use. Then you could delete the item you don't need out from the original style file you are using.

Steps (see attached .gif as well):

Select the style item you want to copy.
Either Right-click the item and select ‘copy’, or navigate up to the Catalog Ribbon and select copy from there in the ‘clipboard’ section.
From the catalog ribbon, select the drop-down button for paste and select ‘Paste special’.
A dialog window will open with a drop down of the different styles you can paste the item into. Select ‘favorites’ and then click ‘ok’.
Navigate to your ‘favorites’ style and you’ll see the style item has been copied.
You can then remove the style item from your original style file.
If you decide you need that style item back, you can follow steps 2-4 above and simply select the style you wish to copy the item back into.

I want to remove some items from a style file that I created. I don't want to delete them, just remove from this particular style. When I right click on the item I want to remove, it only gives me the option to delete it. I want to retain some items and their symbology but not in this particular style file. How do I do this?

To fix the ‘read-only’ status of a style, the first thing you will need to do is to upgrade the style. If you are downloading it from the online gallery (Forestry_En.stylx), when you add it to ArcGIS Pro you will be prompted to upgrade. Choose 'yes', otherwise it will remain as a read-only file.

Once you have upgraded the style, it should be shareable. That being said, yes this style unfortunately has some limitations with sharing as a web style. There are limitations with special characters because the ‘key’ fields within a style need to be a valid for a url. Since many of these desktop styles were from ArcMap, they contain these special characters since they came from before the web style days.

The work-around for this is, unfortunately, to manually change the ‘key’ for the effected style items. When you open the ‘share as a web style’ pane, after filling out the descriptions and tags, etc., click on ‘analyze’ this will give you a list of which symbols contain these special characters, so you can find them in the style and manually change the special characters in the ‘key’ field. (see attached screenshot.)

@ShannonGonzales How can I fix a read-only Esri stylx (e.g. Forestry_en.stylx) to make it compatible for Web Style publishing?

Esri's styles use "/" and other special characters in their names which is not supported by Web Styles.

I need a little bit more information about the style you are working with. If you are trying to edit any of Esri's system styles (such as the 2D, 3D, etc. styles), these are all read only and you wont be able to make changes to them in your catalog view. However, if you are working with a style you have created, you should be able to edit it. Check out this link as well: https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/help/projects/manage-styles.htm under the 'Create symbols and style items' section, for more information about the read-only system styles.
