how to split shapefile into smaller zipped files?

Hi,

I am trying to split a shapefile to smaller zipped shape file based on GEOID.

I was using ArcToolbox-> Analysis Tools-> Extract-> Split menu.  But the output files are not zipped per GEOID. It split into individual files.

I am not aware of a tool that outputs a zipped shapefile by default, but there are other posts where users have figured out how to script the process.
