How do new Partnered Collaborations differ from previous practice of using groups between online orgs?

The documentation on Partnered Collaborations is a bit light. I am trying to understand how the new Partnered Collaborations differ from the previous practice of setting up a group and inviting members from other orgs?  Does the Partnered Collab offer some greater benefit?

@Natalie_Campos , the difference is that partnered collaboration will allow editing/co-creating of content between users from other organizations. Without the partnered organization, you can invite external users but the content that is shared to the group would only be for viewing only.
