A long time ago a saw a sheet that listed the best ArcMap symbols to use when publishing to AGOL. It insured clear crisp symbols. Been searching and cannot find it.

We did find that Circle 2 takes 6 times longer to draw than Circle 1 for instance. Prob because of the outline. Using ESRI_Optimized seems to make no difference.
I know I saw this before so hopefully someone has it.
