I'm using Scene in ArcGIS Pro and I don't understand why my Label Placement is grayed out even though I've selected my Feature Class in the Contents panel and the Maplex Label Engine is checked? I'm new to Pro and could be missing something obvious.
This issue was first raised in September 2017. Here we are in November 2024 (85 months later) and the bug which is preventing labelling in 3D scenes appears to still exist.
It's 2024 and this is still an issue. The entire ESRI UC this year was centered around 3D mapping--but we can't label scenes? What gives?
I'm using Pro 3.0, which should allow for the customization of label properties in a scene. But I am having the same issue--all label position properties are greyed out, with the exception of the placement drop-down.
03/2022 , still having this bug. Leader line does not display at all, unfortunately, in 3D.
It is now November 2021 and I am having the same problem. I thought I was doing something wrong. Alas, it is a bug. ESRI: What is going on with fixing it? Any idea? Thanks!

@Robert_LeClair, you are with Esri, correct? Can you offer an explanation/justification?
How has this issue still not been addressed? Label placement in 3D should be pretty fundamental to functionality of Scene.
Still a problem in ArcGIS Pro 2.5.0 while in a scene environment arcgispro 2.5 yet another bug 3dlabels
The issues with not controlling label placement are improved, but live on in 2.4.
These are labels that I had to create in the 3D layer. The label placement buttons look greyed out, but if you expand to open the full label panel you can change the position here.
However, the alignment options still don't work. I'd really like to be able to center my multi-line labels.

Hi Eduardo - so in reviewing the bug report with other customers via Support Services, I've learned there is an enhancement request ENH-000119346 (Allow option to disable ArcGIS Pro 3D scene labels showing through buildings at street level." At first read, it seems unrelated, but in a deeper review of the request, it does reference the BUG in this thread and mentions that later releases will focus more on 3D labeling. So this means that this issue is with us for the near term sadly.
HI Robert. Thanks for your reply.I just moved it to the 2D Contents Pane and nothing changed in the Label Placement options. I moved it back to the 3D pane and now the labels are on top of the points - which is fine, but I'd like to make some changes on the "Position" section, but they are still grayed out.
If you move it into the 2D layers of the Contents Pane, does the Label Placement UI not gray out? Please advise.
Hi, I'm having a similar issue here. I'm labeling points in a Scene but all the options are grayed out - I can't even select options from the Label Placement. I tried with different features - same thing. I'm currently using ArcGIS Pro 2.3.0
Nope. Still having the same problem in Pro 2.2.3

Update for Pro 2.1 - the bug lives on sadly in the latest iteration. For customers experiencing this issue, you may associate your Customer ID with the bug by calling Esri Support Services. With more customers added to the bug, perhaps it will be resolved sooner.
Well, in the meantime, you can use a featureclass in the 2D section with symbology. You can copy/paste this featureclass in the 3D section with a label and no symbology. You will not have the choice of label, bit at least it will be some label...
Apparently it's a bug that has the label placement disabled. The issue has officially been reported, but have no idea on the timeline as to when it'll be fixed. Until we hear otherwise, we're out of luck on this one....

Ive had trouble with labels in the 2D group, when I move them to the 3D group they seem to work better.
Pete, there are too many options to sift through, you will have to elaborate on where the process breaks down. I assume that you have a featureclass layer which can be labelled, but the point where the options gets activates suggests that something simple hasn't been done
two access points
1 right-click on a layer and select 'Label' , the labels appear and the toolbar options appear
2 right-click on a layer and select 'Label properties' the following dialog appears as well
Dan, thanks so much for responding. As far as I can tell my labels are turned on. I've right click onto my feature an turned the labels on that way....also clicked onto the labels icon in the upper left to turn them on as well and still the label placement is grayed out.
