Because some of the label settings are buried within a multitude of subsettings, it would be nice to have a format paintbrush similar to microsoft's.

Excellent idea. Symbology import is possible between features classes, alas labels are not part of it.
Similar tool can be developed for the free flowing text first and then may be for the labels.
