Query in ArcMap from a map service

Give the ability to query by location (get geometry) using an ArcGIS Server map service.  First off your map service has to be a feature service to allow this functionality - secondly you have to make a local copy for editing!  I don't want to edit - just be able to use the service to do a select by location with other data in my map document.  When you enable Feature Access on your map service it gives you 2 options to check - Editing and Querying - if i only choose Query then i shouldn't have to make a local copy for editing - should I?
