Since 2005 Uruguay started planning its National System of Protected Areas (NSPA), together with Surinam the only countries of South America without an NSPA. The main objective of the NSPA is to conserve a representative sample of all biodiversity values of Uruguay. Since then, Uruguay started to designate the first Protected Areas (year 2008) but still lacking a National analysis that could tell where to design and which national system object each area will contribute to and which would be the most efficient set of Protected Areas (PA) to meet this main objective.
