Does anyone push their Esri data to Intergraph I/CAD?

I'm trying to find people to commiserate with who are Esri users who were tasked to roll map data to Intergraph's I/CAD system. I have heard snippets about their new I/Map Editor toolbar that supposedly works with ArcMap now, but haven't found a whole lot of information on it. There is no GeoNet in Intergraph-land...

Most of the time the data was stored in spatial databases like SQL Server and Oracle. For local data I've preferred to store it in GeMedia's MDB files, but I've published data from almost every file format that GeoMedia can handle.

I've never had the curiosity to compare the performance between different file formats, but I've never noticed any issues on this subject.

Hi Bruno - Yes, we have found issues with 16.5 (the resolve text conflicts will cause the workspace to crash during a map publish) and the MPS doesn't route correctly (we have to go back to 16 for that one). Unfortunately we made a lot of cartographic changes in 16.5 prior to realizing how problematic it would be.

Do you point your workspace warehouse to shapefiles or a file gdb? We use shapefiles, but it seems like a file gdb might be faster while I'm working with geomedia. We need a successful maproll before I'm willing to try it though.

hi Johanna. I know what you're being through... I've published maps for ICAD for at least 5 years.

For populating ICAD tables the 16.5 version of IMapEditor is ok, but it's the worst one for publishing .map files...

What I can suggest to you to make things easier is to run GeoMedia 16.0. If you have concurrent licenses just setup a v16 instance on another computer or virtual machine and point it to to your license server. GeoMedia licenses are retrocompatible, a v16.5 license can activate any GeoMedia version down to v14.

Have you upgraded to 9.4 yet? We just did this fall (from 9.1 to 9.4) and I'm struggling with the latest version of geomedia (16.5).

I just came across this post...we've been using geomedia and iMapEditor for many years now to publish a .map file for our Intergraph CAD (computer aided dispatch) system. Recently we upgraded to geomedia 16.5 and are having a VERY difficult time publishing a .map file (processing the data, creating plys and exporting labels is all fine) . Is anyone one using this version of geomedia successfully?

I am just now investigating how we can get our Esri data into I/CAD for our Police service. Our GIS here used to be a Geomedia shop but I've forgotten it all. We are hoping to automate this conversion if we can. FME is an option for us. Am I understanding that you have been able to export the data from Esri in the formats needed? I was starting to get the impression that this wasn't possible. So far, I can't even get anyone to give us the data requirements for I/CAD so I have no idea where to even begin. Would you be willing to share any models??

Agood way to learn python besides class is export models out to python. You can then add better error logging yhan modelbuilder. ESRi does not support model export to Pro, so now is a good time to learn python while this functionality is available in ArcMap.

Is this workflow even available with Pro yet to be done with models?

I joined the IPS yahoo group the people are generally nice and helpful but it is not very active.... unless I'm on a different group? Many are not from ESRI background or dont use ESRI to pull data into their dispatch maps.

I am also working with Intergraph CAD 9.3 (getting ready for an upgrade to 9.4 within the next year). I have been the GIS Analyst for a 911 center for about 1 1/2 years now. We dispatch for both fire and law for an entire county. Have you folks seen the yahoo IPS Mapping group? I have found the site useful and very participatory when folks have questions about best ways to do things/lessons learned. I would also like to keep this topic alive. We use Intergraph CAD 9.1 hoping to convert to CAD 9.4 next year. As the GIS person here my job is to pull data from a few different sources (all ESRI based) on a quarterly basis to update the dispatch map and all mobile units for public safety. I run 6 different models of varying sizes and complexity to prepare the ESRI data for export to the geomedia platform.

I am looking for ways to refine and update the process I currently use.

Sorry, I have no resources other than experience. Depending on the version...GeoMedia Desktop can read a File Geodatabase. The trick is getting the connection set up properly. I recently retired from a county that uses Intergraph CAD ver 9.4. They've been using the Intergraph CAD product for close to 20 years. They run GeoMedia Desktop version 16.00.0000 Build 10271 with I/Map Editor version 16.00.0000.00038. I recently assisted with rebuilding their GeoMedia geoworkspaces to work with the new version of their Hexagon CAD product. I also worked with the GeoMedia suite when it was an Intergraph product. I'd like to see this thread continue as well. The Hexagon CAD product is out there in a big way.

Our Dispatch Center bought us the version of FME from Safe Software (the thing Data Interoperability extension is built on for Esri) that specifically allows writing to GeoMedia formats. We use FME for a million other things non-GeoMedia realted too, it's pretty handy when you get used to it. I like it way better than Model Builder.

I unfortunately cannot provide you with any resource. I do understand your dilemma, I work with the same sort of set up. I have to take ESRI data and bring it into a Geomedia map for dispatching services. I currently use a series of models that were built by someone in the position over 7 years ago.

Lucky for me they are still functioning. I have made some small tweaks to a couple of the models but so far have left them in tact.

I'm not sure what data you are having to bring into the Geomedia environment. There is next to no support from the Geomedia and no community support around.

Can anyone provide me with a resource on how to best convert an Esri GDB into an Intergraph GeoMedia format? I'm finding very little on this topic. Will the Esri Interoperability Extension do the job as a quick convert? Or will I need to develop custom tools to do so? Thanks!

ESRI is the "Cadillac" in my view and I think for the original poster also...... Lucky you Yes I find Hexa support and platform V disappointing in both realms. Sad to know the backside of all the services that are important fire, ems, law must rely on such mediocrity

My solution was completely self-serving: I left my 9-1-1 job and went to work in a 100% ESRI shop. (Best career move in all my years!) From what I hear from my former colleagues, Hexagon continues to disappoint both as a CAD and mapping software.

Joining this conversation a bit late. Hoping to keep this thread from dying as so may cross platform discussions seem to do for ESRI and Hexagon/Integraph/Geomedia. I also come from ESRI background and just last year took a position that required me to work with both ESRI and Geomedia for map rolls to a CAD system.

Wondering if anyone here has any updates to the threads above or have found a way to drive a Chevette as well as a Cadillac and learn to live with both.

I am assuming that you are referring to Data Interoperability when you say FME. Would you be willing to share your ETL tool?

Oh, and we've noticed that there seems to be a scale limitation in the multi-source map. I don't remember off hand what the particular scale level is, but the upshot is that they can't zoom in as closely on the imagery as they were previously able to. We've got a ticket in with Hexagon on that as well.

We've been stuck in a bit of a loop with the Hexagon mapping team, working through some higher priority issues (i.e. getting out of county routing to work). They've not had anything helpful to say about the shield issue to date.

At the 9.3 version of Intergraph CAD they have, essentially, 2 mapping windows - the traditional one that displays the .map file and is used for verification and what is called the multi-source map. The multi-source map can consume services and the extent can be adjusted to match that of the map window. I think the general idea is to use the multi-source map for reference layers and preserve the .map file for functional layers. However, based on the feedback from our dispatchers, there is a minimum level of labeling that is desirable for the functional layers and route shields are one of them.

Have you guys talked to the Hexagon 'gis' guy about this? I've just been sitting in the first two map build classes recently, so I can't really answer your question. Seems like a reoccurring theme that needs to be dealt with....

Edited a little later: in the classes I've sat through, the instructor mentioned using outside map sources for visualization purposes. For CAD functionality you have to process the data into the Hexagon format: a process not unlike the orginal Spillman outfiles or the Versaterm VGI tool. At any rate, would consuming an ArcGis server map or AGOL etc be a viable option in addition to the CAD map?

I'm currently working on a large initial map role using only ESRI and the I Map Editor toolbar. Its been a long road, used to use GeoMedia even though I'm an ESRI shop.

I'm also having issues with the labeling, specifically shields at this point as well so I share your misery. I'm currently waiting for an email back with suggestions from Hex.

Will be watching this topic for updates from everyone.

We've been working with the I/Map Editor tool bar for a couple months now. And the labeling issues continue. Labels are run off of annotation feature classes and one of the most frustrating issues we've been having is dealing with the road shields. In ArcMap the shield labels look fine, but something happens during the publish process causes them to have large text and a tiny shield background. Has anyone done this successfully?

Label with text too large for highway shield.

We are also maintaining data in ESRI and moving it over to Intergraph CAD with I/Map Editor. I think there is a CAD version (9.3, maybe?) pre-requisite for the I/Map Editor toolbar, so we are waiting on our 911 center to get us a trial. My colleague was the one in the meeting, so I don't have all the details, but will try to keep you updated.

And, yes, working with Geomedia is very different than ESRI. We struggle most with labeling and extent because of the crazy process to create a new SVG symbol. However, I noticed that ArcGIS Pro seems to handle data connections like Geomedia does -- as in you have to connect to all your sources in each project.

I also move our GIS data from ESRI to Intergraph's I/CAD. I currently use FME and GeoMedia for that work but am also looking to move to the new tool for ESRI. I've heard through the grapevine that it's still too new and that it would be best to wait a bit before trying it.

We have been moving ESRI data into Microstation for several years. We're not moving database information, but adding CAD pen table symbology (color, Level, etc.) to the ESRI attribute table for plotting county maps in Microstation. We have a developed a model for the process. We'd be happy to share it.

Yes, *used* to be Spillman. We moved to Intergraph a couple years ago and all and all it's been a good move. However, learning GeoMedia after using Esri for so many years was like driving a Chevette after owning a Cadillac. And finding people in the same boat is difficult, there isn't nearly the amount of camaraderie and sharing on the Intergraph side, it seems. Or at least, I haven't found it...
