The ArcGIS Explorer team is very close to completing ArcGIS Explorer 2500 (formerly named 2012) we have one remaining issue that we are working to resolve today. If the problem is fixed today, ArcGIS Explorer 2500 will be available for download next week. I will update this thread with the precise status when it is known.

As Joe Flannery points out, this release has been a long time coming, the team prefers to release on a 4 to 6 month cycle. For this release we leveraged new capabilities in the Esri enterprise system, and the coordination with on-going work in that system (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS online) took some extra time to synchronize.

Thanks for your patience; the next release of ArcGIS Explorer will be the best one yet.

I don�??t know if this is a 2012 beta issue or a general ArcGIS Explorer Desktop paradigm that I haven�??t figured out yet.

I am developing a Common Operating Picture capability for a customer�??s emergency preparedness group. They want to have a wall display running a loop of continuously updated status information about their various campuses and buildings around the country. The presentation function is working very well for navigating place to place and changing which layers are displayed.

I am updating building and campus status in feature classes that are in a file geodatabase using ArcMap 10.1 and some geoprocessing models. I have set up simple point symbols for the layer in ArcMap where a green circle is �??Good�?�, a yellow square is �??Moderate�?� and red triangle is �??Severe�?�. I have then saved a layer file from this ArcMap layer. During an emergency event, the underlying file geodatabase will be updated to change the status which will then automatically update the symbology shown on the presentation map slides.

I have ArcGIS 2012 beta deployed on 3 machines in the customer site. One machine also has ArcMap 10.1 (ArcGIS Advanced (Arcinfo)). The other 2 machines only have ArcGIS Explorer beta 2012.

On the machines that only have ArcGIS Explorer 2012 beta, my point symbols are not showing up properly. The triangle and square end up being the # sign with color coding and the circle ends up being the ( sign with red color coding. This does not occur on the machine that has Arcinfo.

So�?�I am guessing that some Esri fonts that get installed with Arcinfo aren�??t included as part of the ArcGIS Explorer Desktop installation process.
I have looked at the ArcGIS_Explorer Style Reference point symbols and am not sure that they will meet my needs.

Guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will work with beta 2012, but you could try installing the Build 1750 Font Expansion Pack located at this site:

It is the Fonts. When the Final Release of ArcGIS Explorer desktop 2500 is available there will be a fonts expansion pack that you can install to get the fonts.

For 2012 you could....
Uninstall 2012
Install 1750
Install the Fonts Expansion Pack for 1750
Uninstall 1750
Install 2012.

The Fonts are just installed in the Windows\Fonts folder on the machine. You could also copy all of the ESRI fonts in this folder from your working machine to the fonts folder on the machines that are not working, as a workaround for beta 2012.

I have pulled the esri*.ttf fonts from a machine that had ArcInfo to put them on the machine that didn't, putting them into the windows fonts directory. This has provided a work around for us. Thank you.

We would like to be able to use the USB flash drive approach for quickly allowing users to run directly from memory stick. At final release, will we be able to have the ESRI fonts withing the explorer (x86) directory structure on the USB flash drive?

It feels like we are given a time that this will be released and when that doesn't get met we are given another future date, and this is frustrating.

I mean seriously, there are only 16 days left in January 2013. . . only 12 of them are working days.

Is AGX build 2500 (previously 2012) totally broken, that it needs this much time to fix?

I use this widely in my organization and I have been waiting for some time to update my training materials for my users because i don't want to update them until this has been released.

Thank you for keeping us up to date on this forum. I too am awaiting this release for dozens of users throughout our organization. We are actually flying people in from across the country for training at the end of this month. It would be IMMENSELY helpful to get an idea of an estimated date for the release (two days from now?, two weeks?), as I will need to create training/test/deploy/etc. I do appreciate the responses, as this is clearly an important product for many customers of ESRI.

I received an email describing the need for a Bing Maps Key for various ESRI products. I did not notice a mention of ArcGIS Explorer.

I am posting question here because the Key issue will affect the soon-to-be released version.

Will ArcGIS Explorer be able to use Bing Maps through a key? Are there any details that can be shared about this?

World Imagery is not, as far as I can tell, as good as Bing Aerial yet.

adding my voice to the masses as well. However, on the hypocritical flip-side, the more we push for an on-time release, the more liklihood of there being show-stopping bugs, which is usually the case with a major version release of ESRI products. It will be real disappointing to raise all this fuss just to find that it only runs on quad-core dual processor machines with 4GB video cards (the reason why we can't deploy 1750 is because of serious hardware incompatabilities).

The past few weeks we have been working on improving the performance of fully cached mapservices (Web Mercator Auxillary Sphere and WGS84, The ArcGIS online basemaps) in 3D. This past weekend we discovered some new mathematical approaches that could yield even greater performance increases over what we currently have. We are taking the next 2 days to assess whether this approach will yield the expected results. This means that we will not be releasing ArcGIS Explorer 2500 this week.

TPColson - The ArcGIS Explorer 2500 system requirement level is the same as 1750. We know that ArcGIS Explorer does have problems running on a combination of graphics cards and drivers, often an updated driver can resolve the issue, but it is not always the case. As far as other system specs, if the graphics card and driver are not a problem, ArcGIS Explorer runs on some low end machines, at least by today's standards. One of my test machines is a 10 year old XP OS single core pentium 4 with 2GB of ram, I even have a Windows 8 64 bit OS dual core with 2GB of ram.. and ArcGIS Explorer runs on both of them.

Does 1750 work with the Bing Maps Key thing that is coming in February? If not, then the usefulness of AGX nearly 100% depends on the release of 2500 - Bing Maps Key ready.

We do not use 3D.

We use this software to put lines and points from file geodatabases and possibly shapefiles and geotagged photos on top of aerial imagery. That's what we do, all day long. World Imagery service does not cut it yet - it is not as good as Bing Aerial, especially outside the lower 48 states, and often within.

There are maybe two weeks left before the end of our use of AGX - crushing since I've been promoting it as a solution.

If there is a fairly stable Bing Maps Key ready build that can be installed, let us have it. 3D can wait.

Mark, this is incredibly frustrating. IT won't roll out 1750 knowing that a new release is due out, but you keep announcing delays of a new release. Meanwhile we have a non-ArcMap user base (large) that is increasingly dependent on access to basic GIS data. We're not in an ESRI testing lab, we have computers with very restrictive hardware and software bottlenecks due to corporate policies, T1 connections that are firewalled down to 128K, so all the "Bling" web services, ArcGIS online, and 3D "extras" really aren't in high demand. Explorer desktop is a great tool for us to deliver enterprise GIS products to lower-tier GIS consumers. I suspect that many posters in this thread share the same issues. Like a previous poster, all we want to do is push out feature classes and shapefiles so people can do their jobs. They're not going to sit in their (service/patrol) vehicle and wait 2 hours for 1m resolution air photo to load in 3D over a broadband connection. They're just not interested in that. Is there a threshold at which all the extra speed and features, which are really used by a small portion of Explorer users, can be shelved to a new release and the rest of us can move forward with our (ESRI-Based) GIS architecture build-outs?

Hi,

The beta version was extremely buggy, and it is good that the development team have taken their time to ensure it is stable. However, now is not the time to experiment with new alogorithms for improving 3D performance. Developing new features/improvements now will just push the release further back, or even worse, force a release upon us that has not been propertly tested. It is far better to release with outstanding issues fixed, and wait for improvements in other functionality for a later release.

Tom, you are not alone. We want it released and many others have sent me e-mails with similar sentiments.

Nick, The ArcGIS Eplorer user community is large and demanding and we are trying to meet the needs and expecations of as many users as possible. The 3D improvements are isolated and something to try while we do final testing for the release.

I greatly appreciate that you take the time to respond to the posters directly and specifically; I think that shows great professionalism, especially in the presence of us cantankerous users. . .we are critical and we have high expectations, but it is because it is a great product for the cost 🙂 . . . You are doing good work to keep us informed . . .it really does make a difference to know what the hold ups are . . .

I have to agree with Nick, we use AGX in as lo-fi way as possible, points, lines and polygons. . .routing . . .the shiny bells and whistles can wait.

I am wanting to get to the point of being able to produce add-ins and our company is at a complete standstill on development and GIS training (for the masses) until the new release comes out.

I am not being critical of ESRI, just trying to convey that out here in the trenches we really need your product.

On a second note, can you or anyone in the cloud of witnesses speak to how the SDK will change with this release and maybe how add-ins from the past will work in the future. . .

The ArcGIS Explorer 2500 SDK remains unchanged. An add-in developed with 1500 will work in 2500.

Just wanted to say to the devs that are bringing us this free and very capable AGX Viewer THANK YOU! Ive been seeing alot of demands being put on a FREE Viewer that people seem to think is a paid replacement. Mark and the others working on this I'm sure are very busy and all the "seemingly" blatant demands are a little over the top. It's great to voice your opinions but harassing the devs will not help them. Kind suggestions to a dev is worth a thousand more productivity points than a heated demand. Software development is very mind taxing and takes ALOT of patience!

I recommend before you roll out a free program to your administration/user base, to make sure (do some research) it is and will be what you need. I know we all have bosses breathing down our necks but don't transfer your lack of planning to your frustration with the devs that are providing a FREE product.

Lets take a deep breath and come down to earth for a sec and thank Mark, Burnie and the Crew for all the hard work and imaginative thinking they are doing in bringing us this VERY CAPABLE FREE VIEWER.

I think we all get your point that this is a FREE viewer but a couple of points should be made clear;
- The viewer was promised in August last year, and there have been ongoing promises of imminent release.
- Whilst FREE, as you put it, many use this product to access content created with VERY EXPENSIVE tools, on VERY EXPENSIVE servers.
- I myself have no problem with using build 1750, but I have advertised the improvements anticipated in 2500 to users, and have stalled the creation of training material and implementation strategies based on what I thought was an imminent release.
- The reason for the latest slip in release was based on trying out new algorithms for 3D rendering. I don't think this is appropriate given the delays already encountered.

I think that the developers have done a good job to bring us a FREE product, but, lets put this FREE product in the context of VERY EXPENSIVE infrastructure that goes withi it.

I'd recommend not to base too much on pre released software. It is exciting but 9 times out of 10 software is pushed back because of issues in almost all instances. Games, OS's, Assorted programs, you name it. And 9 times out of 10 if they are release on time they were pushed out to early and there are bugs that make them more frustrating than if they were delayed. Developers know this and sometimes it cannot be helped. I understand you do not think certain aspects of the program should be implemented to your needs if it will push back release but perhaps you are in the minority when it comes to that opinion? I don't know but that could be a reason.

From my experiences, if you are telling your staff this "software will be coming out at so and so time" make sure it won't curtail your efforts if it does not. I'm pretty sure it will come out but you have to have a plan B. That's just the way software works in my experiences.

We use the AGX 1750 on many computers and have many different licenses here for paid ESRI products ranging all the way up the latter. I chose to push this Viewer out to our staff because it seemed like the most innovative and was also economical as you know, and I was prepared to deal with the inconsistencies a free product might bring with it. I might recommend that to all GIS Authors, don't jump the gun, wait till it comes out and is stable before you count on it too much.

Ditto the thanks to the DEV team! My organization also relies hevily on Explorer to compliment all of the other ESRI products we license (enterprise btw). Thanks for continuing to improve upon the tool!

That being said. A simple target date of when the release might be available might help keep everyone off the DEV teams back and help us all plan our implementations and deployments of the new version accordingly.
