Publish mxd (map service) with mosaic dataset -- Error

Question

Hello,
i got the following problem. i want to publish a mxd file as a map service in arcgis server 10.1. this mxd contains a mosaic dataset and additional feature class layers. when doing the publishing process i always get the following error.

The map was successfully published, however the service did not start automatically. 
Error: service started with errors
The base table definition string ... is invalid
---

When i log-in in server manger i see the map but when i try to open it, only the feature class layers are displayed.
the mosaic dataset was not transferred.

when i want to publish my mosaic dataset as an image server, everything goes fine and without any errors. but when i want to publish the mxd as a map service, i get the error above.

the source files for the mosaic dataset are stored in a folder, where arcgis server and local machine have full access. furthermore the image extension is installed.

has someone an idea, how to publish a mxd containing a mosaic dataset?

Hi Steffen,

did you ever figure this out. I ran into the same problem and even got the message "The map was successfully published, however the Service did not start automatically ..." The Image Service runs properly when i publish from ArcCatalog, but then WMS fails.

Did you solve the probem/have any workaround for wms?

An image service and a map service are two types of service so you would have to publish each type separately, but if you have the license to publish the mosaic as an image service you should be able to publish it as a map service,

hi,
thanks for your answer. that's a good summary.

i use unc path to store everything (raw data, mxd, file geodatabase ...). on this unc path, arcgis server has full access. i don't think it has something to do with the permissions, because i can publish the mosaic dataset as an image service without any problems.

But there is one sentence which is a bit confusing:
"The Image Extension for ArcGIS Server must also be obtained to publish mosaic datasets as either an Image Service, or Map Service."

Does this mean, the image extension is only be able to publish a mosaic dataset as image service or map service, and not both of them?
