Is it possible to load a .lyr file so that the map will show the shapefile with the symbology embedded in the layer file?

Layer (.lyr) files are not currently supported in ArcGIS Runtime SDK for .NET. We are investigating whether we can support them specifically within the LocalServer for the next major release, but the LocalServer requires additional licensing. But the goiod news is, in that same release later this year we'll be supporting the sharing of maps, layers and symbology across the ArcGIS platform (online, desktop, runtime).
