1. I would like to use a REST URL with a feature query like this one

to show only specific records in my ArcGIS.com map (I mean the Javascript map viewer). I tried different approaches under Add Data > Web > URL > (REST) and all failed. Is it possible to do this?

2. Since I was unable to do #1, I used ArcGIS Explorer Online to query the layer after it was added to the map. The AGXO map is here:

That worked okay. I created a new map layer from the query results. But the map layer does not show the feature labels like the original map service does. So I added the map service to the map, also. Is there a better way to preserve the labels?

3. When the same map is opened in the ArcGIS.com viewer (Javascript) here

the separate map service layer with the labels simply will not appear. It's in the Contents list. But check on/off/on fails to make it appear. Anyone know why?

There is a bug here. It seems if you add the service with the trailing slash, it has this problem. If you remove the slash, it works correctly.

So remove the slash (/) at the end of this URL when adding to the map. It will be fixed for our next updated.

Your maps are not shared so I can't view them.

What is the REST URL to the map service with just layers that you are adding to the map?

In general, when you add a sub-layer of a map service to a map, all that is returned to the client is the geometry of the layer. Thus, you don't get any labels. Your approach to add a map service that just has labels is the right way to go. I'm not sure why it's not showing up. So you are saying that you have a map service with just labels in it, right? No other layers. You wouldn't be able to take one layer from a map service that has labels.

Oops. Duh. Shared now.

REST URL for the one layer without the query is
http://data1.commons.psu.edu/ArcGIS/rest/services/pasda/CRH_2011_v03/MapServer/14/

But besides the query layer, I added the entire map service here

http://data1.commons.psu.edu/ArcGIS/rest/services/pasda/CRH_2011_v03/MapServer/

and checked on just layer 14 that is labeled.

It's the separate layer 14 that will not show up in the map at

I can reproduce your problem. We'll have to look at it. I was able to get the labels to draw if I changed the basemap, then set it back.

Thanks for looking into this.

I recall that a couple of years ago, when I was first working with AGO and the AGXO and JS viewers, the final slash was required or not depending on the context. Looks like there are still some residual effects.
