On the old install for Desktop these were a part of the install, but then I heard they were on the same "disk" for SDE, is that the case, or are they just incuded as part of the install for desktop. Trying to connect from 94 to 931.

To elaborate on what Eugene stated earlier. The structure/schema of the 9.4 Geodatabase system tables have been simplified and consolidated into fewer tables, as compared to previous schemas. This was done for a number of reasons, among them:
�?� Provide more open access to the geodatabase through XML
�?� Improve scalability and performance
�?� Provide a mechanism to more easily implement new geodatabase functionality

This change also provides us with an opportunity to provide a consistent upgrade process across all geodatabases. Enterprise Geodatabase, ArcSDE for SQL Express, File Geodatabase and Personal Geodatabase are all upgraded in the same manner.

In order to implement this new functionality and improve the geodatabase in 9.4 it meant limiting connections to the database to 9.4 clients because the changes are too significant to allow 9.3 clients to connect to 9.4 geodatabases. We realize that users have benefited from the forward connection experience between 9.2 SP5/SP6 and 9.3 and did not make the decision to block this between 9.3 and 9.4 geodatabases lightly. We are investigating the possibility of supporting forward connections with future releases of ArcGIS.

:eek:that ESRI does to us. You give us a capability. We like it, we use it, you remove it. Next time, when there are no huge breaking changes in sde, either don't allow us to forward connect, or make sure you continue to give us this capability, please, otherwise you make us unhappy

Hi,

There are significant changes in the implementation of 9.4 geodatabase, therefore pre-9.4 client will not be able to connect to 9.4 server, neither through application serve connection, nor direct connect.

I think that was just a 9.2/9.3 release capability, because there were so few changes in sde between 92, 93, and 931, as to why we were able to connect forward, not a good practice to follow.

Are there any drivers to make direct connection from pre 9.4 clients (ArcGIS 9.3.1/9.3/9.2...) to an ArcSDE 9.4 GDBs?

After working with ESRI, this is what I did:

Created a new database in ArcSDE 9.3.1 and made the direct connection.

This now works.

What I still can't do is direct connect to an existing 9.3.1 ArcSDE database.

The VM running 9.4 is on a completely seperate VM from the ArcSDE or from my desktop.

So, you are running vm for desktop 94, and vm for sde with sql server, and desktop is just that on your workstation. Are both VMs running on the same server or separate servers. I assume you are using ESX, otherwise performance should be suffering

Should log this with support, I don't want to encounter this later on. So, your test connection was successful on the VM, but the actual dc and service connections both fail with slightly different errors from your vm to your sde server. What vm are you using? Is your vm on the sde server, or on your desktop?

OK I installed the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Native Client.
The error is basically the same:
DBMS table not found[Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 10.0:Invalid object name 'databasename.dbo.GDB_Items'.][databasename.dbo.GDB_Items]

9.4 has been installed on a VM and I am trying to access my ArcSDE through a direct connect. I know the ArcSDE is working, because I connect to it from my desktop machine. I can't even set up the connection through the ESRI_SDE service running on the ArcSDE. Has a slightly different error but still dealing with GDB_Items. What's interesting is that there is no table named GDB_Items on the server. I can go through SQL Server Management and see that there is no table.
I should also mention when I set up the connections and hit test connection it comes back with successfully connected.

We have sql server 2005, and are testing native client 2008, I haven't seen issues, especially the one you reported. We have it running on four machines.

I had the same problem so I installed the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client for sql server 2005. I can now do Test connection and it works, but when I click ok I get another error.

Regarding the original question.

If you installed ArcGIS 9.4 beta, you don't need to install any direct connect drivers separately. All the necessary pieces to make backward direct connect to 9.3, 9.3.1, 9.2SP6 are already included.

Thanks for the response on this. I actually wasn't using direct connect & it turns out that the issue was my own error. My existing 9.2 enterprise geodatabase is on a SQL Server 2000 named instance; I was using this convention: <server>\<instance> when attempting to connect, when all that I needed was just the server name.

All set now!

I get a error message when connecting to ArcSDE 9.2 SP5 or 9.3 SQL Server 2000. Failed to connect to database. Connection was attempted with an older version.........

I just installed ArcGIS Desktop 9.4 beta & the first issue that I've found is that I'm unable to create a new connection from ArcCatalog 9.4 to our existing 9.2 ArcSDE Enterprise Geodatabase. I've tested out a couple *.sde connection files to that same database that we have on our network & these work on 9.4, but I just can't seem to create a new connection in 9.4. I've tested a couple different logins & I've verified that I have all of the parameters & credentials correct.

Attached is the Issue, I have also sent this off to support. I have tried sde:, and sde94: in the dc service box. Is there something MS related I need to update??

I will and have, I just need to follow up with Support. Yeahhh, someone got back to me. I tried sde94:sqlserver:Servername, which triggered the backward support error, so let me get with support so we can move forward and actually start doing some real testing.

The libraries needed to direct connect to older geodatabases are automatically included in the desktop install. Can you report this as a bug, please, so we can try to figure out what's going on?
