How to add map elements to some pages using Spatial Map Series in ArcGIS Pro layouts

Question

Hello!

I'm working with spatial map series and have 36 different maps (layouts/pages).  It works great, but for a few of the pages I would like to add another map frame (e.g. an inset map).  How can I do this with map series?  Is there a workaround?  I tried making a copy of the layout for the page I want to add additional elements to, but it resulted in a copy of the entire map series.  Has anyone figured out a good way to do this?

Interesting use case.

It'd be nice if map frames had visibility ranges (cough)

but another easy way is just have a map series with the inset and one without, then splice them together

ArcGIS Pro map series is one layout repeated, so you can’t natively have an inset map frame appear on only some pages by duplicating “a page” (copying the layout copies the whole series).

Workarounds

A) One layout + script element visibility (most common)

* Put the inset map frame (and any extra elements) on the layout.
* Use arcpy.mp to export the map series and, per page, set the inset frame’s visible property True/False (or move it off the page) based on the current page name/number/index attributes.

B) Always have an inset frame, but change what it shows

* Add a second map frame (inset) that references the same map (or a separate map).
* In Pro 3.7, you can use map frame layer visibility overrides so the inset frame shows a different set of layers than the main frame. This helps if you don’t need the inset to disappear—just differ.
