Map choreography-Portal to AGOL

Hi all,

I am adding map image layers to AGOL using the URL from enterprise portal. I create the web maps in AGOL using the added items and then add those to storymap. What I want to do is use sidecar/duplicate slides to transition from one slide to the next as the text is scrolled. The slides will use the same web map but with different layers toggled on/off. The problem is when I duplicate the slides and try and edit the maps I dont see any option for layers, the layers dont appear in a list/dropdown to toggle. I get just the name of the web map with one tick box....not a list of the individual layers. So I dont see how I can have duplicate slides of the same map with different layers toggled on or off? Can anyone help me with this please? I even tried publishing from portal to AGOL (hosted) rather than adding with a URL but the same problem occurs!

@davidchamberlain2 -- From your first screenshot it looks like those five layers are all published as a single map image layer item. That's why they appear as grouped when you add this item to a web map.

You can add each sublayer as a separate layer by following these steps:

Go to the map image layer item page (the first screenshot in your last message)
In the Layers section, click on the first layer in the list in your first screenshot
Copy its URL from the browser address bar (you can close this browser tab after copying the URL)
Go back to your web map in the map viewer
On the Layers panel, click the arrow next to Add and select Add layer from URL (see screenshot)
Paste the layer URL you copied in the previous step and click Add to map
Repeat the steps above for each additional layer

A layer URL will look something like this:
https://sampleserver5.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/rest/services/DamageAssessmentStatePlane/MapServer/0

Alternatively, I believe there's a way for you to publish each layer separately from ArcGIS Pro. If you plan to use these layers in multiple stories, it might make sense to separate them out at the item level instead of having to add them manually to additional web maps in the future. If you do this, you will see that each layer is available as its own map image layer item in your ArcGIS content.

@davidchamberlain2 - I'm sorry you are not seeing that you expect. Are you able to share a screenshot of your web map as it appears in the ArcGIS Online map viewer and also one of what you are seeing in the story builder so we can get a better idea of what might be going on?

Hi Owen,

I add the map image to AGOL using the URL from Portal and then create the web map. The web map has layers for voles and trout. I am trying to use duplicate slides so as you scroll down and the text moves from voles to trout the map changes with it from voles to trout. The problem is there is no option to toggle layers on or off in the map edit mode within storymap. So I dont know how to achieve the map choreography!

@davidchamberlain2 -- Thanks for the images. It looks like you have several layers bundled together in a group layer. The ArcGIS StoryMaps builders enable you to set the visibility only of the top level of layers. If you reorganize your web map to remove the group layer, you will see all the individual layers when configuring it in the story builder.

To do this, just drag the layers up and out of the group layer, save the web map, then re-add it to the story and you will be able to set the visibility of each layer.

Hi @OwenGeo ,

This has not been published as a group, its individual layers in the project. That top level title and the dropdown is created by the software when I open the map image in a web map. I can move the layers around to change the order in the web map by dragging them but I cannot move them out from that dropdown list/group. There is no option to ungroup as it hasnt been published as a group. As I said before the web map automatically adds the title and dropdown when I open the map image in the web map. Thank you again for your help so far, its driving me mad as this should be so simple!

Copilot tells me this-

This is an ArcGIS Server Map Service (MapServer), not a hosted feature layer (FeatureServer).

And here’s the key rule:

Every MapServer contains multiple sublayers and ArcGIS Online always displays them as a group (dropdown) in the web map.

This behaviour is built in and cannot be turned off.

It happens because:

A MapServer can contain many layers inside one service
ArcGIS Online treats the service as one parent item containing multiple child sublayers
Therefore the web map must show them under a single expandable group
Even if the original map in Pro had no grouping, the sublayers come from the MapServer structure, not your map

So you are not doing anything wrong — the dropdown is created automatically by ArcGIS Server’s service architecture.

Adding the layers individually to the web map using the URL as you described has allowed me to select/deselect layers and get the choreography working as I want.
