Did something change with the clip tool?
I'm clipping one feature by 6 smaller features. The output is just one feature (although otherwise correct). I would expect 6 output features.
Did it use to do that or am I imagining things?
Are you using a multipart polygon by chance? To my knowledge, there's been no change to the Clip GP tool. There is a new Pairwise Clip GP tool listed on the header of the Clip tool. Could be worth a test too.
could be geometry dependent, but I just ran a quick test and clip and pairwise clip return the same results.
Interestingly, if you switch the order of the inputs (clip one with 6 vs clip 6 with 1) the outputs were the same but the number of records in the table differed. clipping 1 with 6 did a dissolve producing a multipart shape, two of the shapes were overlapping and those internal boundaries were dissolved as well. A quick multipart to singlepart left 5 records reflecting the dissolving of the overlapping clipping boundary.
and the images
So I test the workflow in ArcGIS Pro 3.6.2 and ArcMap 10.8.2 and the results are identical (see images below). So nothing appears to have changed in the Clip geoprocessing tool from what I see.
