In most cases, CAD data can be decoded into a more human-readable format for the 'Layer' attribute, which behaves similarly to a VIN: each alphanumeric character, concatenated with hyphens, represents a different meaning. The first character represents a Designator, the second a Major, the third a Minor, and the fourth a Status.
Generally, these follow specific CAD standards, such as the National CAD Standards (NCS). Please let users select a CAD Standard and its version; if selected, the Layer attribute field is split into its components, and a domain is automatically applied to decode the various fields. This won't catch layers that don't follow a standard, but will catch most.
