Snapping

Question

Hello there, recently started working with a utility company that deals with sewer lines and manholes that were never connected (snapped). What are my best options to solve the problem? I have 11,102 points and 10,631 lines. Additionally, it is on a server using SDE files. We are currently cleaning the database to transfer it to Argis Pro soon.

You might want to start by running Topology Rules in ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro to identify and fix the disconnected (snapped) lines and points — rules like “Must Be Covered By Endpoint Of” or “Must Not Have Dangles” can help a lot Since you’re already using SDE, it’s best to clean and validate the data there before migrating. Once in Pro, ,you can also explore Trace Network or Utility Network tools to manage connectivity more efficiently.

In this case your best option may be the Snap geoprocessing tool in ArcGIS Pro, but since you said you're moving to it, then you may not have this tool available to you. Would it be possible to load the data as a FGDB or similar into ArcGIS Pro and use the tool? Are you coming from another program with this data that may have this?

Since you mentioned the SDE, that sounds like an enterprise geodatabase setup, as long as there's Arc Pro on the network, you should be able to pull the layers in and run geoprocessing tools on them.

There is the Snap (Editing) geoprocessing tool that does modify the source data. It would move manhole covers to the sewer lines.  I would test the tool on copies of the manhole covers (points) and sewer lines first before committing to the source data.
