Basemap question

Hello,

I have a large .sid file for local imagery.  I would really like to save/create this file as a tile package, or other relevant type, so that I can use it as my basemap.  I need to conserve as many credits as I can.  Can anyone help with this?

Do I need to convert it to a jpg first?  I really have no idea how to do this.  The local imagery would be most beneficial to the field maps data collection that I am doing with GNSS receiver equipment.

I would be greatly thankful for any advice/help.

Hopefully someone with more experience will reply to you, because there are lots of ways to make the file smaller and use less credits.

If you just want to use it in field maps, you could create a map tile package on your computer, and then you could go into field maps and tell it you are using a custom basemap.

Then you can put the files on your mobile device and can "sideload" it as a basemap" without having to publish it in AGOL. so that should not use any credits, as long as when you package it in Arc Pro you uncheck the box that says package it online, and pick a location on your computer to package it instead.

The good thing about doing it this way is if the image is really big, it is only taking up more space on your mobile device and not using credits. And you can experiment with tons of settings to try to make the imagery look good but also load fast.

For publishing online:

A friend helped me publish imagery  in AGOL as a tile service recently and I created a map tile package and saved credits by packaging it on my computer instead of packaging it in AGOL. (Uncheck the box that says package online).

Here are some screenshot of the steps I took, I hope this helps, but if you decide to sideload it as a basemap those steps will be different.

 

1. Select the Map, then open the Create Map Tile Package tool

 

2. Open up file explorer and check to see that the tile package is located where it was created, also check the file size to be sure it isn’t too big. 

 

3. Login to ArcGIS Online, and click New item, then drag and drop the file into the pop-up window.

4. Click to Publish your raster tile package as a hosted layer:

Fill it out as follows, and be sure to save it inside the Landfill folder then click Save:

 

6. Set the Visible Range and also check the box to allow it to work offline then wait it to finish saying “processing tiles” then click Save.
